Service Charge & Gratuity

Amanda, on November 7, 2019 at 4:43 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

So the pricing for my hall/in house catering includes an 18 % service charge. I asked the site coordinator about service charge vs tipping and they said the service charge is not a tip, that is something that is up to our discretion. She did tell me though that their servers are not paid the tipping minimum wage (i.e. the lower rate that waiters are usually paid), so I wasn't really thinking about tipping until my dad pointed out that gratuity wasn't on our invoice and he said he'd make sure to bring cash the night of. What do you guys think, to tip or not to tip?

You should tip or opt for a caterer that allows you to pick up or drop off trays of food so you don't need waitstaff.

You should always tip waitstaff. They are doing a job for you, so you tip them.

See I always tip waitstaff, but I do so mainly due to the fact that I know that they are earning less because they can get tips. I dont tip my accountant or my gym trainer, people also doing a job for me, but their base income amount isnt effected by tipping. I'm probably going to end up tipping even though they dont have the lower tipping effected base, I'm juzt interested in the idea behind it.

DEFINITELY tip. Service charge is NOT gratuity. We gave $30 to each server.

I think that, depending on cost of living in your area, I would tip between 15-30, as long as I was happy with the service. I would also demand no tip jar at any bar, although some people may still tip.

I always tip at restaurants and bars, because I've been a server before so I know the pay. I didn't tip. I had no service charge and my venue specifically told me as well that the workers were already over-compensated. I physically had their wages in my possession on my contract. They had a suggested tipping list, but verbally and written said it wasn't necessary. Okay so I didn't. The bartenders got tips from guests and so did the valet. I also had many qualms with my venue that led me to that decision. If i had zero issues I might've felt differently about it. I don't consider myself a terrible person for not tipping them because like I said the people running the show there said I didn't have to.

PS: they were making $24 an hour at minimum on my dime. We paid for that. I don't even make $24 an hour at my day job with a master's degree just sayin.
