September Brides - New York

Michelle, on July 14, 2020 at 5:24 PM Posted in New York Planning 0 14

Hi - Has anyone heard any news from their venues on guest capacity? We were suppose to get married July 11 and postponed till September 6th in Westchester NY. Right now my venue is only allowing 50 people indoor and outdoor dining. I am just not sure what to do. This is so confusing and scary at the same time. I want to get married and start my life already but I am also nervous that something could go wrong, my biggest fear is someone getting sick from my wedding (Which actually happened to someone we know, she got married in March and 60 people caught COVID from her wedding.. total disaster.)

This is such a tough position for us all, any advice would be really appreciated because I just don't know what to do anymore its actually depressing!

Have you guys considered doing just the ceremony with a few close family and friends and moving the reception to next year? Its a tough situation but it'll all work out the way its supposed to.

I am feeling the same way. In CT they are allowing 100 people outdoors and 25 indoors. We had to postpone our wedding from September to June 2021

Will your venue allow you to postpone again? If so, now would be a good time to talk with your venue and vendors to come up with another backup plan in case you decide to postpone again in the next few weeks. Otherwise, I agree with the previous comment's suggestion of maybe doing a small ceremony this year, and postponing the larger celebration? I know nothing about this situation is ideal (I'm in a similar scenario, my July 31, 2020 wedding got postponed to July 2022), but things will work out somehow!

I am feeling the same. I’m set to get married August 15th in CT. We originally planned on 150 at our wedding but scaled it down to 30 (immediate family and bridal party). My feeling is you don’t know what is going to happen so we want to do now and then focus on our life as a married couple.

Do you still have a band/dj? Or are you just doing a dinner style type event? I just don’t know what to do anymore everything is so uncertain.

We are having the band still to do the music and announcing. We are doing an extended cocktail hour with passes appetizers and a couple of manned stations. We are also going to do a cake cutting etc. We are also going to set up the wedding on zoom so anyone not included and can watch everything in real time.

Our (former) venue in Westchester reached out to cancel on us last week. We’d already moved the date once and they said they wouldn’t be able to do a wedding in August and we weren’t interested on moving it again

The capacity is 50 right now, regardless indoor or outdoor. cuomo said he would consider increasing capacity if infection rate stays down but i doubt will go higher than 75 if he does that. i cut my guest list from 100 to 50 and I am going forward with my september wedding in westchester as well. logistics of the wedding havent changed that much

It is 50, which is Ny law. Some are trying to get around it by saying they’re a restaurant which would allow more guests but you’d probably get in a lot of trouble for that

If you don’t mind, are they giving you a hard time about refunds? In the same boat but theyre the ones who wouldnt let us postpone again

They are fine with refunding us, but in June we had a call where they said they wouldn’t because we would be cancelling and i pointed out the contract would be void if they couldn’t fulfill it on the specified date and we would require a refund in full. They had brought it up with the corporate office so that might have helped this time around. Definitely reread your contract, ours had a section that said they would have to refund us if we couldn’t agree on a suitable date. If they won’t let you postpone it sounds and you have something like that it sounds like they’d have to refund you.

They did want to hold onto the money until 2021 (when they get new deposits basically) and we said sure but we’ll be charging interest so they’ve agreed to refund ASAP.

Wow. Ours is refusing to refund us, we will have to do the same thing you did and point out the contract specifications. The problem is that we talked to the owner, who is apparently a very terrible person, and he is refusing to help us. I wouldnt know who else on their staff to talk to about it. Wow that thing with the interest was smart for sure. Definitely a good way to get the refund quickly

If the contract is on your side and you clearly lay it out for them they should hopefully come around. I’m not sure of your situation, but if you were to litigate for breach of contract they would likely end up paying more trying to defend it than simply refund you. I understand these venues are losing money, but so are the individuals, and now wouldn’t be an ideal time for them to have you to start posting reviews about your experience!
