Separate stylists for bride and bridesmaids?

Katelyn, on October 10, 2019 at 10:00 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
So I have been in a bit of a pickle with finding a hair and makeup artists. My wedding is roughly an hour away from where I live. I am keeping hair and makeup for my girls optional. I found a hair and makeup artist that I really LOVE. I expected costs for bridal hair and makeup to be high (I am very picky about my hair and makeup), but I told one of my bridesmaids about the pricing and she seemed to be really disappointed. I knew going into Wedding Planning that some of my bridesmaids are in different places financially, which was why I opted to make hair and makeup optional. However, I feel super guilty selecting a hair and makeup artist that is going to be cost prohibitive for some of my friends.

I am considering getting a second artist for bridesmaids, and am wondering if anyone has tried this before??? As a bridesmaid how would you feel about this? One of the artists I got a quote from had a really pretty portfolio (at about half the price point), I just did not want to go with them for my makeup because they did not offer air brush. I do not want to come across as snobby or rude. I just hate the idea of cost keeping people from getting hair and makeup done if that is something they would like to do.

For my brother's wedding, some of us went to one salon and others went to another salon. My sister-in-law didn't want to get getting ready photos so it wasn't an issue what we went to two different salons rather than have the stylists come to us.

Does the stylist you chose offer different prices for bridesmaids? The company I chose will be sending 2 Hair and makeup artist, mine will be more expensive and my bridesmaids will cost about $80 less.

The pricing is less, but it’s not quite that significant. The quotes I’ve gotten is only about $30-$40 less. Mine being $150 and theirs being $110 or $75 for only one service. (I have to book a trial separately which would add some extra tho)

Some artists may not want to work with other artists so I'd double check before booking. Both weddings I've been in, HAMU for a bridesmaid was $150 and I paid. At our wedding, we covered their makeup and it was $140 each.

If a bride told me it was optional, another stylist wouldn't matter if the prices were similar, I would find someone on my own!

Could you ask them what the maximum amount they're able to pay is, then cover the difference?

As a PP mentioned, some artists may have an exclusivity clause--including my MUA. I think she's cool with it if you disclose working with multiple artists ahead of time, but it's a $500 'forced collaboration fee' if there are multiple MUAs and she wasn't made aware beforehand. Definitely check about that sort of thing.

If I were a bridesmaid and I was going to be paying for hair & makeup myself, I'd appreciate access to an optional HMUA--it wouldn't matter to me if it was the same artist as the bride or not. But I also wouldn't mind finding someone on my own.

I'm making hair & makeup optional for my bridesmaids as well. So far, one is opting out for makeup but in for hair, and the others are in for both. I also selected higher-end artists ($300 for makeup alone, including a trial), but the prices for bridesmaids were around $75-$85 for each service, which seemed pretty on par with the market around here.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! I didn’t even think about an exclusivity clause (I haven’t signed a contract yet though). I asked the artist and she said she often does collabs with other artists for weddings, especially with larger groups. With that issue out of the way I still don’t know what to do haha! I would love for all of my gals to be able to get hair and makeup done if they want to, and I don’t want price to prevent that- buttttt I also really want to go with the artist that I love. I thought adding the lower priced artist might be a good solution for my friends who were on a tighter budget since there isn’t much to chose from around our venue. I was more so worried this idea might look snobby, and am considering just booking the cheaper artist without air brush so it’s more affordable for my group.

I’ve asked a few and everyone’s price point is a little bit different. One thought $40 per service was the most she could do, another said they could do $120. Helping on an individual basis though gets realllllly tricky and is probably some drama better left alone lol!

I'm having a DW and I have 3 MUA coming with us (also invited to wedding) 1 will exclusively do my make-up the other 2 will do MOH and bridesmaids. (8 total)

I am allowing my girls to go to their own hairstylists. However, because Make-up is tricky, I am choosing the MUA. I wanted two MUAs because of timing but also felt that if one MUA charged $70, i can’t force the other MUA to charge the same. Then, have my BMS pay different prices etc. So, I think pitching in to help your BM pay the cost or offering her to do her own makeup might be best. Unfortunately, things cost and when signing up for a wedding people should be aware of those expenses.
