“send-off” after ceremony vs reception?

Mary, on February 27, 2018 at 2:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
Our wedding is at 4pm in November, so by the time the ceremony is over, the sun will be setting. Our photographers will not be staying until the absolute end of the reception, and it’ll be pitch dark anyway at that hour. All that being said, would it be weird to do our “send-off” (I don’t know what else to call it) as we walk back down the aisle after the ceremony?

We’re also staying at the venue that night, so I don’t feel like we need to do a farewell send-off at the end of the night. Plus, I don’t really want to leave the reception & we’re all going to the after party after the reception anyway.

I’ve been thinking about doing dried lavender/flower petals, so those would look better during the day than at night too. I just haven’t been to a lot of weddings, so I don’t know if it would be weird for us to do this.

We kind of did. The ceremony and reception were in different places. After the ceremony, as we exited the synagogue, people clapped for us. We didn't have a send-off after the reception.

I went to one where, in between the ceremony and reception, all the guests had to line up with sparklers and make an aisle for the bride and groom to walk down for a photo op. Similar time frame to your event. Honestly...it felt very canned, it took a long time to get organized and get the sparklers lit, it was chilly, and we all just wanted to go in and get drinks and the appetizers.

I should also add that the bride has posted tons of photos but none of this, so I'm assuming that they did not turn out as well as hoped for.

Yeah I definitely don’t want it to be like, a staged photo op situation. More just our guests showering us from their seats as we walk back down the aisle, instead of as we exit the reception.

We did a send-off after the ceremony with crazy Pom Poms. Everyone loved it. We couldn't stop laughing! We got a fun photo op and send off while you could see it in the light.

Check with the venue. Mine is very specific about what we are and are not allowed to throw.

Ours just has to be biodegradable & not sparklers.

I think having the guests throw something at you would be the best way to do this. I like the pompom idea from PP, you could also do flower petals, confetti.... I've seen a beach wedding do mini beach balls (This was on the TV show Four Weddings)

I think showering with rice after the ceremony was often what people did, so you could do the flower petal throwing as you exit the ceremony.
