Selfie stick DIY photo area at cocktail hour?

Morgan, on July 24, 2017 at 1:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I'd love to have a photo booth at the wedding but it's just not in the budget at this point... so I was considering setting up a cute backdrop outside on the lawn (big gorgeous farm venue) for pre ceremony and cocktail hour for the guests to take photos. I would provide some props and a few selfie sticks on a little table with instructions and our hashtag. My question is twofold:

1. Is this super lame and cheesy? I know selfie sticks are the devil to a lot of ppl

2. Would guests be into doing this at cocktail hour/ pre ceremony? Obviously the reception is when people are most loosened up but I don't really want a bunch of selfie sticks on the dance floor. This would be for mainly just cocktail hour outside.

Any opinions appreciated! Thanks!

I would suggest you skip it. People will be taking plenty of pictures and selfies and they don't need a backdrop or an obtrusive selfie stick. They most likely won't use your hash tag so don't waste your time with one or spend any money making up a sign.

Personally, I don't like the use of photo booths at weddings. They take people away from the reception. It's bad enough some people insist on obsessively taking photos instead of just enjoying and living in a moment. They don't need a designated space to do it.

I think this is a great idea to keep people entertained during cocktail hour. The props make it fun for people of all ages!

Usually I get bored during cocktail hour so what I'm planning on doing for mines is to have board games in each table. For example in one cocktail table I will have jenga, in other table I will have chess, in another one dominoes. The photobooth is a great idea for the reception. People love it.

We did this at our wedding. It was a hit! I would suggest buying selfie sticks that have the aux cord instead of bluetooth. I did have to buy a few converters for the newer iPhones, but they were cheap and it worked out just fine! Target sells the selfie stick I'm referring to in their dollar section (for $5). I bought three but really only needed two when all was said and done. Also, I did not take the selfie station down during the reception. It eventually fizzled out on its own and became dancing instead.

I like the selfie station idea is really fun! Set up a hashtag so you can see the photos and get some cheapie party city props and your good to go. Attach something long to the selfie stick so that guests don't walk off with it.

Yes that will be great! I'm doing the same thing. People love to take silly pictures and that will keep them busy while the wedding party is taking pictures. Go for it!

EBay has a DIY prop set (244 pieces) for $8. What's your theme?
