Self-serve or Bartender

Angelica, on August 25, 2020 at 5:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 12
We’re having a Backyard wedding this October with about 80 guests (all family or close friends)
We’re going back and forth between self-serve bar or bartender due to COVID.

With the bartender it will just be the one person touching everything. However, the question becomes how many weddings/events has this person gone to in the last week. How many people have they had contact with?
With self-serve it’s obviously all friends and family who are already gathered in one (outdoor) space together, touching the same dispenser handles.
Which would you go with? Or if you were a guest which would you be most comfortable with?

I think if the bartender wears a mask, that would be the better option. Maybe even put up a plexiglass barrier. I think having a bartender leads to a more orderly bar and reduces crowding, which is more likely to spread covid than the surfaces are.

I personally like the idea of bartender just because they could actually make you a good drink but I totally see what you mean in terms of their exposure

Bartender for liability issues every time. They will be properly masked with soap and water on site and following strict health department laws so prior weddings shouldn't make a difference.

Self serve at a family bbq is one thing. But you run into loads of trouble with self serve at a wedding even without a pandemic.

Bartender! The bartender will wear a mask, you won’t be liable for your guests over consuming, and it just looks nicer to have someone serving drinks.

Bartender with mask is a lot more likely to take precautions than a guest just focused on getting a drink

Definitely I'd have a bartender. For liability reasons and for Covid precautions (assuming the bartender is masked, etc.)

I would rather a bartender. I wouldn’t go by the questions that you mentioned because just like you’re asking them about him/her, it’s the same with your family and friends. You won’t know where or who all 80 people have been around either. Just have them wear a mask!

I agree with everyone else about hiring a bartender for non-COVID-related liability reasons.

But also re. this: "However, the question becomes how many weddings/events has this person gone to in the last week. How many people have they had contact with?" If the bartender is wearing a mask, they will be more at risk from your guests (who will only be wearing masks some of the time, presumably), than your guests will be at risk from the bartender.

Yep, exactly this. The number of potential contacts increases exponentially if your guests serve themselves. How many people has each one of them come in contact with? Someone who’s job this is will be much more precautious, and follow proper protocol.

I am doing a self serve beer and wine bar. We have a large jug hand sanitizer in front of the beer and wine so people can sanitize before getting their drink. We also go liability insurance through our renters insurance and there wont be anyone under the age of 21 there.
