Self serve cake

Bob, on August 5, 2018 at 2:21 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13
Hello!
I am having a laidback wedding with food trucks and self-serve appetizers and cake. We will have 4 flavors of sheet cakes and the idea is that guests can help themselves (based on staff and helpers we have, it seems unlikely one will be able to fully man the cake table and serve cake but staff will be nearby to supervise and help).

Would you preslice the cake? Let people cut their own? Preslice rows?

Thanks!

I would definitely pre-slice the squares (so folks don't have to fuss with cutting) and leave stacks of plates and several cake server utensils on the plate.

The only concern I'd have about pre-plating is that if there are leftovers, it will be a pain to regroup and pack away.

Your wedding sounds like a blast!

Pre slice, but don't pre-plate. I'm with Katie 110% on this.

Check and see if your baker will pre-slice it when they frost it (maybe something like the picture below). I wouldn't encourage self serve with a layered or stacked cake, but sheet cakes are pretty simple and shouldn't be a problem.

Pre-slice and plate. Too many people use their fingers when they serve themselves cake. Honestly, I wouldn’t eat it if people were cutting and serving themselves.

Preslice and plate. Don't let people cut their own slice. You'll end up with wildly unequal servings and odd shapes. Also, getting a cake slice onto a plate can be a messy task for some folks so make it easy and fair by having everything done for them. No one has to physically hand them a slice. They can grab their own off the table. So have a worker slice, plate, walk away

I used to work for a catering company, and we almost always presliced and plated wedding cake! We didn't cut the whole cake all at once. Usually we'd just cut and plate enough slices to fill up the cake table. Then, when needed, we'd cut and plate more. That way you don't have to worry about the leftovers as much, which seems to be some people's concern!

I’m on team pre-slice and plate. For the exact reasons B11 and PF mentioned.

    I agree with this.

I also dont think pre-plating is necessary.

I love a food truck...your wedding sounds yummy and fun!

Pre-plating is necessary for sanitary reasons. Too many people use their fingers when serving themselves something. I’ve seen it at plenty of events where people will scrape the icing of the serving utensil with their finger, yuck! Professionals wear gloves when they cut and plate to avoid any unsanitary situations.

As for someone who works in catering for weddings, I would at least have it pre-sliced, but also one person for so many guests is kinda rough (from personal experience). Normally after the cake cutting there's at least 2 people helping cut cake and guests can just pick a piece and go.
