Self Catered Wedding

Natalie, on January 11, 2018 at 8:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 34
So my fiancé and I want to make our own food for our wedding reception. It’ll save us SO much money and we have so many family and friends around us that will contribute to making food. The only problem is that we cannot find a place that allows self catering. Any ideas and/or help would be much appreciated!

Don't let your family cater the wedding. It's a lot of risk and liability involved with self catering. Your family should be there to just enjoy the day. You're not going to find a reputable venue that will allow you to do this. There's liability. I would look into BBQ or Italian restaurants for inexpensive catering. Cut your guest list if you can't properly host guest with adequate food. That way you can find a caterer in your area. Contact some restaurants for example olive garden. Most will actually deliver it for you. You can hire people to serve it. You'll have to do a lot of research to find a caterer that will be within budget.

Do not self cater. And just as an FYI most of the people here will be against it too. One of the reasons you are having trouble finding a place is because no one wants to be liable for serving food to people that hasn’t been cooked properly.

There's a reason you can't find a venue that will allow self catering. It's called liability.

The venues don't want any part of a claim for food poisoning that can result from a bunch of well meaning people with no commercial food preparation experience or food safety courses, deciding that they are now experts.

Of course you can't find a place that does self-catered, it's a HUGE liability and any legit venue would NEVER allow that to happen.

    DO NOT SELF-CATER.

There are about five million reason why self-catering is not ok. Why would you want your family/friends to WORK on your wedding? Staying up til all hours, slaving over a hot oven/stove, not enjoying themselves at all?

Plus with all the equipment to even make the food safe to eat, you probably won't be saving ANY money.

Look into BBQ and Italian food - it is a less expensive option.

Any person knows the food budget is what makes up at least half of the budget for the wedding.

We are all pitching together to make food for my wedding, we are doing it family style a family member picks what they want to throw in the crock pot I take it off the food list and some one else picks another we do this for all family get togethers ( bday party's family reunions, and my engagement party) no reports of anyone dieing... feeeeew we must be lucky..... or maybe my family just knows how to properly handle food.......
But to your question if you flip over every stone you will find a place where you can save hundreds of dollars by making your own food maybe an entertainment hall, the place I wanted to go allowed us to bring our own food....
I wish you the best of luck and don't let no one tell you u cant....😆

    Is it Wednesday? 🌞🌈

The reason you cannot find a place that allows self catering is because it’s a liability. There are so many stories about food poisoning from food not being handled correctly. Why would you want you family and friends to work on your wedding day?

Lol, just don't self cater. Please. Don't make family work your wedding. If I came to a wedding and saw a crockpot (or multiple crockpots) I'd literally laugh out loud and leave to go get food somewhere where I can trust the chef. Crockpots and weddings absolutely do not mix. Even the most casual wedding in the world doesn't deserve a crockpot.

Your family and friends are not employees. Hire a caterer. Look into BBQ or Italian restaurants.

If you're going to self-cater make sure it's a cash bar, too. That will save you a lot more money. And if you have a honeyfund, you'll even come out ahead.

Hire a caterer; have a smaller guest list so you can afford said caterer. Let your family and friends be honored guests at your wedding by NOT working on your day.

If someone asked me to make something for their wedding food wise I’d think it was SO rude. HIRE someone. This is worst than a cash bar and a honey fund omg

Please don't do this. Besides the valid reasons other people have given you, it's gross. No one wants to eat mass-produced food made by people who aren't professionals.

There’s a reason for that. They don’t want to be a part of the liability. Vendors have insurance.

Some venues will allow this as long as you purchase special occasion insurance.

I would go at this not from the food safety angle, since no one ever believes it could happen to them, and instead from the amount of work.

My fiance and I are experienced at throwing large parties. We hosted an event for 250 in September at a hall with a professional kitchen and walk in fridge and freezer. I made all the food by myself- two hot entrees (one vegan and gluten free) and sides. I also made fancy cheese and cracker platters, cut veggies and made dip. The buns and desserts were store bought. Because of the facilities and my experience with food handling, I had no trouble keeping things at appropriate temperatures and preventing cross contamination.

Guess what? Sure, it was cheap. If you hadn't had my connections, it likely would have cost about $1200 (I actually spent less than $400.) But my fiance and I worked from 8:30am to 6:30am the next day doing setup and teardown. We were so tired we barely got to enjoy the party.

Don't ask your friends or family to do that for your wedding. Let them relax and enjoy this special occasion and not look back dreading it.

This is not a good idea for the reasons already enumerated as well as the fact that neither you nor your loved ones should be worrying about cooking or handling the food on your WEDDING DAY. You should be enjoying yourselves and CERTAINLY not asking supposedly honored guests to work!!
