Second Shooter-yes or no?

Holly, on February 6, 2020 at 7:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi Brides!

Right now, my FH and I have a videography/photography package for our wedding in Temecula, CA. We have the opportunity to hire a second shooter. But should we?

We are having a weekend away with 70 of our closest family and friends, and have photography coverage for 8 hours on our wedding day. I want to do a first look. He says he doesn't need prep photos with the groomsmen. The reason we are hesitating is because this means we would need to pull about 360.00 from another item on our wedding budget.

What do you guys think?

Personally I feel like one shooter will be fine. I think the money toward another shooter can easily go toward something else that might be a bit more important to you wedding related or not.

I am having a wedding comparable in size. We will be inviting 75 guests. We are only having one photographer. I feel like it will be plenty of coverage!

I think it depends on what you want out of your photos. My FH and I hired 2 photographers and 2 cinematographers because we want our day captured from multiple angles. For instance, we want photos and video of our immediate reactions to first seeing each other at the ceremony. And my FH wants prep photos and so do I. I’m sure you’ll make the right decision for you ☺️

I think one photographer is ok. If you were having video though I'd definitely have a second person

After seeing how the two photographers (and two videographers) worked at daughter's wedding, I don't think it has much to do with the size of the guest list as it does with being able to get coverage of the same events from different perspectives (and cover multiple locations simultaneously). So, for first look, daughter's walk down the aisle, during vows, etc., the photographers & videographers could capture both daughter and SIL's perspectives/faces/etc. Also, they were able to get some truly stunning, special photos because they had the opportunity for one of the shooters to go after something "different" while the other captured "the expected." For example, daughter's primary photographer was shooting the ceremony from the back of the space, while his (excellent) second shooter was shooting from the side of the altar. At one point, when he knew second shooter had the close photos of the ceremony well covered, the photographer went back inside the venue, sprinted up the stairs and got some truly amazing photos of the entire ceremony/assembly from the vantage point of the upstairs windows of the venue.... The photographer later posted one of those photos with the caption, "sometimes, you're really lucky and see a ceremony from a whole new and stunning perspective." He was right. That photo (and many others) is gorgeous, but he couldn't have taken it if he'd needed to be "at the ready" close to the ceremony. Is a second shooter a luxury? Yes. But, different perspectives can truly capture precious memories. Good luck!

Totally worth it. Our photographers literally never only send one photographer because they don’t think their best work can be done with only one shooter.

Couldn’t have gotten both of these shots if we only had one photographer!Second Shooter-yes or no? 1Second Shooter-yes or no? 2

Yup! Even if for 2 hours. The best shots happen in a short timeframe.

I absolutely agree with you! This is why we decided to get a second shooter as well and I’m so happy we did!

If we redid our wedding, I'd hire a second photographer for sure. Our videographer had two people already so that was included.
