Second photographer????

Olga, on July 2, 2020 at 9:36 PM Posted in Planning 1 19

so after 1.5 years of being engaged (we've been together almost 10 years so all good) we finally decided to start planning this wedding. We have booked our wedding venue and date. So that's checked off. Now ive started to look at photographer packages and im shocked by the prices!! what I am seeing is that the difference is in having a second photographer. At first I was ok with it as my fiance likes that idea but now that I really am comparing the prices, is it really worth it??? Thoughts? We will have hopefully 100 or less people at the wedding if that is important Help!!!

I think it’s worth it. They’ll get shots of other angles and photos the first photographer might not. But if it’s a big price diff I’d also just save the $

From what I am seeing it is on average about a $1000 difference which is a pretty penny as we are spending more on the venue that expected but i guess the idea of different angles and capturing getting ready can be important

Did you ever think about doing one photographer and then getting a videographer?

I agree. I'm actually thinking about getting a second shooter. I would say one is enough especially with your guest count but it also depends on what you really want to capture. Especially if you do a first look you can get both you walking and him waiting then him turning around and both your reactions. Things happen simultaneously and I just think it would be great to have. Just make sure it's also in your budget. If there's anything else you can think of to cut costs elsewhere so you're not crazy over budget, I think it would be worth it for sure!

Thats what I am worried about..... how this will impact the rest of the budget, I haven't even looked at caterers and I know that will cost an arm and a leg. So again, trying to decide whats a priority which I guess is how I can talk to my fiance about it, narrowing down what the priority is in the long run and going from there.

Understandable. It will also depend on what kind of food you're trying to do. If your venue allows outside catering you can do like a taco or burger bar of some sort. You can get catering from somewhere else and it will also depend on if you do plated or buffer. Definitely options so see what you got. You're right though, priorities so if in the long run it's not in your budget, don't worry about it. It's nice to have but not a necessity and I know your photos will still come out absolutely amazing. Good luck with the rest of your planning!! Smiley smile

For what it's worth, my photographer told me that she generally only uses a second shooter when the guest list is over 100

$1K for a 2nd shooter is ridiculous. Keep looking! Our photographer included one at no extra cost.

I recommend the second shooter if it's in budget, but if not, you should be fine with just the one photographer. Are you able to negotiate to have the second shooter there for fewer hours than the main photographer (maybe 3-4 hours)? This way, you'd get multiple angles captured on a few key events (ceremony, first look, etc), though the cost shouldn't be as high.

I agree! I would continue to look for other photographers. Every package our photographer offers included a second photographer for no additional cost.

For my area the second shooter was included based on the number hours booked. I want to say anything over 6 hours you would get a second shooter.

Totally worth it! not because of the number of pictures, but because of the ability to be multiple places at once and get 2 different angles. How else would you get both your reactions down the aisle?! We were supposed to have 2 photographers but actually ended up with 3 because they brought an extra photography “trainee.” No complaints here! These Photos were taken all at basically the exact same moment by the 3 different photographers and honestly I wouldn’t want to be without any of these!Second photographer???? 1

It all depends on your budget. Second photographer is an appealing idea because another person will take the shots with different angles and you will get a lot of different photos, thus you will see yourself as if you were a guest. Still, if it's to pricey then there is nothing wrong with having only one photographer. It depends on their skills anyway, not the amount of the people taking shots, you see. Sometimes the second photographer can suggest a discount or something can be done for free, like all the culling and post-processing or even the smartshow 3d slides, so you can really benefit from it. I'd hire 2 photographers because I love having MANY photos!

Hey, so based on budget wise look for students majoring in photography looking to get in experience, build their portfolios, and expand their hours!! They are most of the time so passionate and detailed because they know it's their goal to reach perfection. On that note 2 photographers work well by getting different angles and a videographer truly helps capture the sceneries and details you will most likely miss with all your bridal to-do's.

I 100% think it's worth it. My only regret from my wedding is not having a 2nd photographer. We hired one of my sister's best friend's who has her own photography business - and she is the only photographer. She did a good job but there were certain things that were missed and I didn't get all of the photos I wanted because she was only one person. She spent the morning and "getting ready" time with me and my bridesmaids, which was fine, but I wish there would've been another photographer with my husband and his groomsmen as well. He went golfing and got ready in his own hotel suite with his groomsmen and a few other friends prior to the wedding and I wish we would've gotten photos of that, because I've heard it was a wild time, lol. In addition, I wish we had more ceremony photos from different angles. Don't get me wrong, I love my wedding photos, and she did get different angles, I just wish we would've had more of them. Our reception photos were great and she got photos of just about all of our guests, but there was one photo specifically that I wanted that she told me she would get, but she never got it.

I think, if you have it in your budget to get a 2nd photographer, I would 100% do that. Like I said, that is the only regret I had with my wedding. I still got a good amount of photos from her and most of them I love, I just wish there were more.

A second shooter is so important! This will help you capture different angles and views of the day and they are so helpful in keeping things running smoothly during the portraits.

We had a small wedding, under 70 people. We knew we wanted to keep it on the smaller side AND that we wanted to splurge on our photo/video package. We had 2 shooters (for photo and video)...100% worth it.

I didn't originally want 2 shooters, it seemed silly to me. We ended up with some the of best photos because we had so many different angles going. Our first look was captured from 2 different angles and the photos are priceless. We had 1 lead photographer, he took more of the artistic photos, our first look and some shots of just the 2 of us, and a second shooter who did the guys getting ready, our family photos and a lot of candid shots.

It is expensive to do that, so it really has to be something that you want. You'll end up with beautiful photos with 1 or 2 shooters. It really comes down to if you can make room for it in the budget.
