Second marriage - We don't want our guests to give us gifts...

MnDex, on November 16, 2013 at 8:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

We only want our guests to join us to celebrate our marriage; come eat, drink and be merry. I wanted to put something in a note that will accompany the invitation and I wanted to say something like "Dexter and I would love to have the presence of your company only. It is our desire that you not bring a gift of any kind. Your gift to us would be to honor us with your presence at our celebration" That just came totally off the cuff. My problem is this...does that sound presumptuous? We don't want to come off sounding like a pair of presumptuous jerks...is this something that even needs to be addressed? If you ladies think it should be addressed, what do you think of my words? I am open to suggestions or advice!!

Thanks so much in advance!! ;-)

Sign up for simpleregistry then add just one item: Donation to a charity of your choosing. I have my church on mine. Then when people ask, refer them to the site.

I'd go with no registry and word of mouth. I think it's a lovely thought though!

Yes, I am afraid it *does* sound presumptuous. This is the kind of thing you need to spread by word of mouth. People will ask you what you want, or will ask your friends for advise. Just tell them in person what you have considered writing and let it spread through the grapevine.

I still think charity is better than nothing. Some people are going to want to do something, even if you say no, so this at least gives them a choice and helps a good cause.

Yes, I thought of that as well Kristie and what I was planning on doing is letting them know if they want to do something to make a donation in my niece's name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation :-)

Your first sentence makes it sound like dont bring anyone but you. Shorter is better, "Your presence is the greatest present we could wish for" theres some cute & great intros on the Printsonalities website, http://www.printsonalities.com/category/archives/resources/wedding-invitation-wordings/in-lieu-of-gifts-wordings

Paris is right. People will still bring a gift, so something along those lines "your presence is the best present" and still register for the charity!

People are going to want to get you gifts. You can add a cute saying about how their presence is requested, but not their presents. The charity idea is pretty cool. Your guests may WANT to get you gifts though.

Give us presents with your presence! Catchy little phrase right there, lol.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

I agree with Aspasia. but, I wouldn't be shocked if you still gets gifts. a lot of people still bring them.
