Second Dress

Tiffany, on August 27, 2020 at 3:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 17

I have looked through all of the forums about a 2nd dress and have not found anyone with a situation similar to mine. I bought my dress a year ago. It's a full ballgown with a lot of layers on the skirt and a long train. I just had it altered (with a bustle) and go pick it up tonight. But I was just made aware that it is 99% certain that our venue will have to move my reception outside due to COVID and my guest list being above 50. October 3rd in Arizona...yeah...

So, now I'm concerned that I am going to be so hot in it. I'm 100% wearing it for the ceremony because my mom paid for it but I'm worried it'll be too hot to spend another few hours in 90 degree weather in addition to dancing. It's supposed to get down to the 60s once the sun starts to go down but if you have ever been to AZ you know that's still hot!

Thinking about getting a 2nd dress just so I don't get over heated and possibly sick. But I'm not even sure what to begin to look for in a 2nd dress and I have just over a month! Has anyone been in this situation where their reception needed to be outside in warm weather and wore a dress you sweated your butt off just standing for alterations?

If it's just the skirt that's hot, you can get a hoop skirt crinoline that holds the dress and underlayers away from your body.

I found a little white dress for the reception. It actually reminds me of a flower girl dress. It does not match my wedding dress at all. Other than its pure white. Sept 12 is our wedding and here in Michigan its supposed to be 80.

I have purchased 2 dresses only because I didn’t want to bustle my dress ( mostly because the bustle was going to cost more than my actual dress.) so i went and bought a 2nd
I like to dance so I find it very comfortable and the fact that I have a choreographer first dance will be easier.

The first one is my actual ceremony gown Second Dress 1
This one is my reception gown Second Dress 2

It's already super ballgown lol any more and I'd get lost in it.

80 is still hot especially when you throw humidity into the mix. That's one thing I'm glad we don't have here in AZ. When people say "its a dry heat" it really is true. Is your 2nd dress shorter or same length?

See, that's my other thing. I got a bustle on my dress expecting to wear it all night and now that it's already done and I go back to get it today I find out we're having everything outside so now I've wasted soooo much money.

Shorter. And loose fitted. Its tight in the chest area but flowy everywhere else. Come to just below my knees. And very light. My wedding dress is heavy and it has lace and pearls and itchy and has a small train. Definitely not wearing that all day lol

I wore my ballgown to my minimony in Texas during the 100° heat wave. Although the ceremony was indoors, we took pictures outside around town, and the reception was partially outside after sunset when it was still 80°. My groom was wearing a tux (no vest).

It. Was. Hot. He's more sensitive to heat than I am, so he was over it after about 30 minutes (but he suffered through). I wore those mid-thigh moisture-wicking shorts under my dress ($10 at Target) and it wasn't so bad for me. I was more tired from walking around town in the heat than the heat itself if that makes sense. Moving around, after 60 mins was when I was hottest and over it. But sitting down, I didn't really notice the heat more than usual. I wasn't rushing to get my dress off, and I never felt signs of heat stroke.

Well that definitely gives me hope! If someone can push through in Texas with humidity in a ballgown I think I'll be ok then. Besides, we're having a party bus afterwards so I planned on just wearing a little black dress for that so I might as well push through the night.

I did have a short dress to change into just in case (see below). I wore it for getting ready photos and kept it around just in case. I didn't change into it until after the reception was over, and only because I didn't feel like stuffing myself into the car again. 😆

I rented my reception dress from Rent the Runway.com. It was easy and my dress was perfect!

You literally can get any type of dress that you want for a 2nd dress. If it’ll be hot definitely find something comfortable for you

I also have a large ball gown and I ended up getting lightheaded and overheating at every alterations appointment I have had so far. This concerned me so I decided to buy a second dress from Azazie that is smaller and significantly cooler to wear. Check the shipping dates (it gives an estimate of when it will arrive to your zip and you can custom order so it fits perfectly out of the box). Mine actually arrived early; I ordered it on July 29, it was estimated to arrive sept 2-9 and I just received it on Tuesday (8/25). Good luck!!

Are you wearing a petticoat underneath the ballgown? Mine was so hot (I’m in Fl) so I switched to a small hoop skirt. It’s so much cooler with the dress off my legs and actually easier to move around.
