Seating Help

Shannon, on November 21, 2019 at 3:45 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

I have a very large family, so does my FH. Sadly not all of my family gets along. How can I organize it to where it doesn't look like I am favoring a family over another, and so that there are no issues?

How would the seating indicate that you're favoring one family over the other? I'm not sure what you mean by that. I just wouldn't seat people with the people you know they don't get along with.

Location within the room. EX. closer to the head table versus further away.

I don't think people would really make much of a fuss about it, but if you're concerned then I would just make a conscious effort to stagger tables. As in for each row have one table your family, next table his family, so on and so forth.

I'm doing the head table in the middle of the room with tables all around it. You could try that? Then more tables can be around you?

Place a Mix of his, yours and friends at tables. Have a seating chart and stick to it.
Put people who have similar interests at the same table, or nearby, and put angry family/friends apart.

If anyone asks why: “So you’ve got a chance to chat with others”....

Welcome! It also makes people happy because they know you out thought into where they are sitting- instead of just clumping family together...

All the weddings I've been to had the head/sweetheart table right behind the dancefloor (so that would be closest to the wall) and then the guests were seated around the dance floor/throughout the rest of the venue. I found it worked out really well because you could put as much family and friends as you wanted around the dancefloor and still have everyone enjoy a good view of you without it seeming like you're playing favourites. The only time I've ever seen an issue was with my cousin's wedding where one of our aunts (kind of a crazy, angry woman) got mad that she wasnt front and center and switched seats with someone else (but I think she only did this because she knew she was purposely placed where she was and wanted to create a problem about it).

The best way to ensure that no one thinks you're playing favourites is to evenly distribute the people with the *best* view from your side and his. Prioritize closest family: parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, and then see how many friends you can fit from both sides (unless of course your friends are closer to you than some family, just mix and match what I said haha)

I'll attach a photo from google that you might like so you can kind of see what I mean:

And the guests would just go around the dancefloor and most people would have a good view

Thank you so much! That’s my biggest worry. Some of my family members are like that, they cause a ruckus just to cause a ruckus. All of these tips are helping make this a lot easier!!
