Do tables at least. If it’s free for all....have you flown Southwest. lol
But seriously, it will be awkward for some and really uncomfortable. You’ll have at least one granny who puts her purse on the biggest table and won’t let anyone sit there because she’s saving it, for people who have already pulled up chairs to overcrowded tables.

I'm just assigning people to tables, not specific chairs. I'm only frustrated because some tables I don't have enough people to sit, and don't want to cram people at a table and make it too crowded!

Your wedding isn't until October, so you have plenty of time. You don't do the seating chart until you get all your RSVPs in. I had 115 people. What I did was write all couples or single people on index cards and then organized them by groups of people that know each other. For smaller groups, I sat them with people who I thought they would get along with. My tables had anywhere between 7-10 people at the table. My goal was 8, but people don't break into even groups that way. It took maybe a half hour to do after writing the names on the index cards.

I’m in Texas and have only been to two weddings that had a seating chart. Most of our weddings are free for all seating and somehow it always works out.

I would just organize people by tables! You don't want to have extra tables/centerpieces to cover open seating which can be very chaotic.

Skip the seating chart. They are hard to read, create traffic jams and people forget where they are seated. Plus they are are expensive to redo when you have to update them.

Do escort cards for each guest and assign them to tables. They can pick the seat. If you don’t, it will be a chaotic circus like the high school cafeteria. Grandma saves an entire table no one sits at, couples and families get separated, relatives who hate each other are stuck at the same table. It’s really not that difficult to group people together in bunches of 8-10. They can always move after dinner.

First, I've never ever been to a wedding with a seating chart. They certainly aren't required.

Second, I'm doing a very basic seating chart. As in "Table 1, P family. Table 4, S family." This is mostly because of things I know about our family's tendencies- like I know my moms side in particular likes to be seated right along the dance floor. My dad's side could care less about the dance floor. Then maybe 2 or 3 tables specifying friends or coworkers. Then the bottom of the sign will say "all else is open seating."
I'm not the baby sitter. Every one is an adult and can seat themselves, I dont need to hold their hands.

Definitely a seating chart.......every wedding vendor I've talked to has said that open seating is always a disaster!

This is why I wish more places offered buffet/ long tables to sit at instead. It works better that way for me since I have such a small wedding list. Having round tables makes things awkward.
