Seating chart- Wedding is Oct 10th!

Arielle, on August 9, 2019 at 7:06 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 12
Hey all. So I’ve begun the slightly dreaded task of my seating chart. I’m still waiting for some family to respond, but in the meantime I’m trying to get it done so I’m not freaking out at the end that it hasn’t been done.

So my tables are 60’ so ill be seating 8 ppl per table comfortably. Of course I’m trying my best to sit people with others they know so it won’t be awkward. Most of my tables have 8, but some are either ending up short at 7 or it will be at 9. Not sure what to do.

I think uneven tables are perfectly fine. Our priority was to seat guests with people they already knew or would get along with. We had tables ranging from 5 (last minute cancellations) to 10. We simply let our coordinator and venue events manager know ahead of time so they only placed enough place settings for the expected number of guests per table. They were spaced out and one more or less wasn't noticeable at all.

A 60' seats 8-10 ppl, so you could always have different number of people at each table. There is no rule they have to be even. You just want them to be comfortable space wise and company wise.

We had mixed tables. One or had 6, most 7 or 8, and 2 had 9. It's just what worked best!

At 60" tables, daughter had 6, 7 or 8 guests. We had two groupings of 10, and luckily the venue had two 72" tables we could use. It's fine if you do preliminary groupings, but, to keep from driving yourself crazy, I'd wait to finalize everything as close to last minute as possible. Things WILL change, so it's best to plan for that.

This is so helpful, thank you! We are October 6th and will hold off until we have our final count 30 days out. Do you think that’s best or wait longer?

We had changes up until two days before the wedding.... (A cousin's husband has health issues, so she asked to bring her daughter at the last minute when her husband wasn't doing well; we completely understood, but it required seating changes -- her daughter preferred to sit with cousins rather than her mom and aunts & uncles....) I'd wait as long as possible. We also did escort cards, which are MUCH more flexible than a big seating chart. When we had to make last minute changes, it was so much easier to change a couple placecards than redo names/table assignments on a seating chart.... Smiley heart

Our tables are going to be like that as well. I struggled so hard because no matter what, I couldn't make it even. I just decided to only include enough chairs and places for the number of people.

So place cards for each person instead of a big table chart with a list of people at each table? That will save money on signs too!

Yes. Daughter's venue just asked that we alphabetize the escort cards. They then lined them up on a table at cocktail hour so guests could pick them up. Each card had the guest's name, table #, and for those with special meals a small symbol so the wait staff would know who at a given table should get the vegetarian meal or whatever. (The vast majority of guests received a duet plate of filet & chicken, so we didn't have to worry about meal designations except for the 3 or 4 special meals.) We found it very easy, and when we had a last minute change it took about 5 minutes to fix it versus needing to re-do a big seating chart. (There's no way daughter could have lived with a noticeable correction on a chart, so a change would require a re-do.... Smiley winking )

I've been building my seating chart as RSVPs come in if that helps! Rather than trying to do it all at once!
