Seating chart name etiquette for families with children?

Amy, on September 7, 2017 at 9:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

I will be doing my seating chart alphabetically because every wedding I've been to where they've been listed by table is so confusing to search through and try to find your name.

Anyway, I have a handful of big families coming - 6-8 kids. How do I put this on the seating chart? I know I don't want to list every single child, but "Smith, John & Mary and Family" is awful long as far as it will take up a lot of space on the chart and throws the symmetry off. But, is that the correct way to do it? Or is it enough to just say "Smith, John & Mary" and have people assume their 6 children under 10 are indeed sitting with them?

Can you just say "Smith Family"? Or what about one line for "John & Mary Smith" and another for "The Smith Children" or "Greg, Peter, Bobby, Marcia, Jan, and Cindy Smith"?

ETA: I would make sure the kids are listed somehow.

I agree with @Bookcase. Go with one for everyone ("the Smith Family") or one for Parents and one for children.

I would just list them all out, personally.

You could do something like this, though:

    Smith, John & Mary - Table 1

    and Family

Next question then, how do I put it when there are families with the same last name?

    "The John Smith Family"

    "The Mike Smith Family"

    ?

I think it is better if you list all the children if they have their own chair. If they don't have their own chair (i.e. infant) you don't need to list then. Otherwise, it will be quite confusing for the family.

@Amy: Yes, that's exactly correct. FH's two brothers both have families, so I listed them as "The Matthew FHLastname Family" and "The Michael FHLastname Family."

I think little kids might find it cute/exciting to have their own name card!

List every name. Why is this a big deal?

ETA: Laura is correct, my 6 year old niece was very excited to find her name.
