Seating Chart Help

Ariel, on September 24, 2021 at 12:16 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 10

I'm working on my seating chart. It's way more complicated than I imagined. Since guest spend most of their time at the table, I want people to sit with people they know and are comfortable with. With that said we have 72 in round tables. We were targeting 8-10 guest per a table. However, we have a few tables with just 6 guests. Will the tables look too empty? Does anyone have pictures of 72in tables with 6 chairs? If anyone has seating chart tips or tricks please share!

Although a 72 inch round table CAN fit 10 people, it is not the most comfortable arrangement. 8 people is ideal. So maybe eliminate the 10 person tables and make them 8 person tables instead.. then add the extra 2 people from the 10 person tables to your 6 person tables.

For reference though, this is a 72 inch round table with 6 chairs.

Thanks, this is super helpful. It doesn't look too bad with 6 chairs.

We currently don't have any tables with 10 people, but a couple with 9, and most with 8.

This is a 72 inch round table with 10 chairs. So although 10 chairs CAN fit, you can see everyone is squished in right up against eachother.

No, 6 chairs doesn’t look bad at all! I would just take 1 person away from the 9 person tables and put them at your 6 person tables

I considered that, but if I take one person away from the 9 person tables and add them to the 6 person table they will be sitting with strangers. I want people to be comfortable and I personally wouldn’t be comfortable at a wedding setting with people I’ve never met. Especially if all my friends were sitting together at another table.

60" rounds typically seat 8-10 people and 72" rounds seat 10-12 people - but I don't think a 72" round will look empty with 6 guests, especially once centerpieces, dinnerware, etc. are placed on them. I agree that you'll want to seat at least 1-2 people less than the max. that'll fit (so no more than 9 for a 60" or 11 for a 72") or guests will be knocking elbows lol. We also sat people a bit non-traditionally (for example, all my cousins at one table and uncles/aunts (their parents) at another) and they seemed to appreciate it!

I also have a cousins table and an aunt/uncle table! I want people to enjoy dinner because it’s yummy but also because they have great company.

The combination that works: start with relationship groups, use your floor plan as a visual reference, and let the AI do a first pass if your tool has that feature.

Having the venue layout visible while you assign matters more than people realize. When you work purely in a spreadsheet you lose track of physical distance and sight lines. Who can the couple see from their table? Are the parent tables close enough to feel included but not so close that there is awkward proximity?

We built Seatbee (seatbee.app) specifically because no other tool combined the visual floor plan with actual guest assignment in a way that was both flexible and fast. The AI suggestions are a solid starting point, and then you tweak with drag-and-drop. Happy to answer questions if you get stuck on a specific part.
