Seating Chart - Cocktail Reception

Sqwiggy, on February 16, 2016 at 1:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

I'm having the ceremony and reception in the same room. No change over. Ceremony happening in the middle of the dance floor. Guest count 100. The reception will have passed hors d'oeuvres, pasta station, stir fry station, and late night snacks. Seating is cocktail tables that seat 5. The food is open for two hours. Going for a fun cocktail party vibe. Question: should I assign tables?

I think since you have 100 guests you should assign tables. It might be chaos if you don't.

ETA- Those tables make it look like it would have a vibe that you choose your own seat. I think I change my answer. This might be a situation where you let people choose their own seats. I am curious what others think.

I am having the same type of feel with half the number of people but I am not assigning seats

I am very pro seating chart but for table likes that, I'd say no chart, but have quite a few extra tables so the only empty seat isn't where grandma needs to sit but 2 couples you know from work are already sitting and there's nowhere else to go.

I think with the stations, you'll want to assign tables at least. Nothing more annoying than getting up to get something from a station, only to see someone has swiped your seat.

I wouldn't. I'd reserve a couple of tables for your family.

I would not assign tables for this kind of event -- but with that in mind, you will probably want more chairs than guests since groups of 5 might be tough.

Read what Stephanie and Celia suggest. Either of those (or a combination) would be my pick

I agree with Stephanie and Celia, no seating chart but a couple more tables than there are guests and reserve a couple tables for parents/grandparents

I would say with the vibe youre going for and those tables, dont assign seats. but definitely do have more tables and chairs than you think you need

Well, if you have the exact number of seats as you have guests, you'll have some weird groups together, especially with 5/table. So if you have 100 guests, I'd have seats for at least 120 so people can sit together like they want.

Would you include high tops as extra seating (all though there are no chairs). I will have some of those.

I would reserve tables for bridal party, parents, and any elderly guests (or anyone) that needs a seat the whole time.
