Seamstress ruined my wedding dress one month before wedding...

Cara, on January 26, 2018 at 12:26 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 19

This is my first post on here. Lord help...I got my dress at Davids Bridal in late December . I picked out a sheath style dress. I am 5'2" and 115 pounds and they measured me for my size. I had originally tried on a size much too large for me (size 8) and I ordered a size 2. They called me and let me know my dress was here 2 weeks later. I went to go to try it on and it's huge on me. Which is okay, since I figured it would be a little big. I decided to have it altered there. A week ago, I went to go pick it up and it was ruined. The chest made me look unnatural and pointy, it gaped about 1 inch from my chest when I was bent over, the entire bodice and lining was bunched and wrinkled (they told me with that fabric it will do that regardless, which I don't believe) and the dress itself was hemmed too short to where you can see my whole feet with no shoes. The shoulders, at first, fell off my shoulders exposing my entire chest. They attempted to fix the straps by pinning them in a different spot. That didn’t work so they ended up ripping the seam and taking the straps into a halter style (which I didn't even like) in attempt to make me not so upset that my dress was falling off my chest. Keep in mind it is spaghetti straps!! OMG I was so crushed I cried and just got the heck out of the store. I ordered 2 89 dollar dresses from LULUS in an attempt to find something in a month's time frame. I just need moral support...lol. I just wanted to be gorgeous on my wedding day. I was SO excited to pick out a dress and now I'm just settling for one I could find in time Smiley sad

OMG I'm so sorry, that is awful! I would complain to David's and see if they can send you another dress and then take it to a different seamstress. That is insane! Can we see pics of the original dress and the dress from Lulu's?

Oh god, that is horrible. I agree with Stacey, I would call David's and have them send a new dress and take it somewhere else to have it altered.

Look at places you can get something nice off the rack: Macy's, Nordstrom, Saks etc. They will have formal dresses that aren't exactly "wedding dresses" but could totally work.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Did you let them know that the alterations they made were unacceptable?

If you don't get any restitution from the store, escalate it to corporate and see what they will do. This is awful, I'm so sorry.

Sorry this happened to you! Smiley sad My sisters can relate to this story. When my older sister was getting married, younget sis and I were bridesmaids. We all got our dresses from a local DB and they were HORRIBLE!!

They ordered the wrong size for my younger sis, and there was about 2 weeks before the wedding so no alterations could be done by them without paying the rush fee. Also, when older sis was in for a fitting, the seamstress straight up said "You got fatter! You gained weight!"

Since I'm getting married now, we're not going to DB! Thank goodness for local boutiques!

Those alterations are UNACCEPTABLE. Take a breather, collect your thoughts, and go back with some moral support (a friend or your mom) and outline all of the mistakes and the necessary changes that need to take place to make the dress right. If they can't follow through then you need to demand a refund.

The hem problem alone is a HUGE issue, they should have measured you with the shoes you would wear and the fact that they got a HEM wrong is INSANE.

I KNOW!! I was shocked. It looks SO tacky with my feet showing. I got the opinions from my parents and my in laws and tried on the altered dress to make sure it wasn't my mind overthinking. They all were shocked it looked the way it did. I told them I didn't feel beautiful or confident in it. They brought the manager back because I had tears in my eyes. She was very pushy and told me that the feet showing " was super cute with my shoes" and "that neckline looks amazing with your shoulders" some BS!! She told me I couldn't return/get my money back. I contacted DB corporate and they sent an email saying that "we could not give refunds at this time". I was pissed. 800 bucks out the window. They told me to come back in and see what they could do to maybe alter it further...but I am NOT entrusting them again. The timeline is TOO slim. I will insert the pic of my original dress from their website. And the two possible ones from Lulu's.

That is awful. I would have thought that since you had it altered there, if they screwed it up they would take responsibility and make it right. At least give you a refund or a new dress. So sorry!

I am SO embarassed to even post my altered dress. It honestly is so unflattering. I have a flat belly.. This makes me look lumpy and bumpy. Sooo bad. My feet!!! GAH!! I have my hands like that to see what a bouquet position would look like.

@Cara you need to have the pic on your computer, not from email.

I would call corporate and demand they rush order you a new dress. It may have to be a sample from another store but at least you'd have something!

Also, it says on the website that they have that dress in stock (for $449) and ready to ship... if this is your dream dress I'd order it online and get it altered elsewhere, and the continue to fight with DB.

Oh goodness I’m so sorry this happened to you. I would definitely demand a new dress for them messing up your dress and I would send pictures of what the dress was suppose to look like compared to how it ended up looking. And zoom in on the parts that are exceptionally bad.
I do like your selection from LuLus. My bridesmaid dress last summer was from there they have great dresses. Good luck and I will avoid David’s for dresses.

Definitely contact the store manager, and ask who you can speak to on a regional or corporate level. You deserve, at minimum, a refund, if not a brand new dress. I second checking out BHLDN! I would also call around to other bridal stores and see what sample sizes they have available for sale. I hope everything works out for you!

Oopsies, sorry new to this forum!! Will do. I am just floored by the work done on it. They told me they won't do anything besides attempt to alter it again. Corporate office email said the same crap as well. They just care about the $$$

CALL corporate. Keep calling til you get someone who will listen. This is 100% their mistake to fix and they can easily deliver a new dress in an adequate timeline.

I would start calling, and immediately ask to speak to the persons supervisor when they say they can’t do anything. Keep asking till you get as high as you can get....

also, it sounds stupid, but I have found companies to be incredibly responsive on Twitter, mainly because that’s a public complaint and they hate the bad press. Don’t stop complaining, and I wouldn’t find your paperwork for the alterations and read all of the fine print, and if you can hold them liable, do so.

If DB will not refund you, I would absolutely call your bank and tell them to reverse the charges. That is absolutely ridiculous to have them force you into having to find a new dress in such a short timeframe! I’m so sorry ):

i do want to say that the two dresses from LUlus are gorgeous and (I know it sounds cliche, but) no matter what happens on your big day, the most important part is you and your S.O. ❤️❤️ Sending lots of good vibes your way!!
