Seamstress - How to choose

Karina, on January 19, 2020 at 8:54 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3
Did anyone go to multiple seamstresses to get a quote for the cost of alterations? Is that even a thing or do you just pick one and hope the price tag isn’t too high? The bridal shop I got my dress from has a recommended seamstress but the reviews are not great, so I’ve been researching others. I’m just not sure how to go about it as I want to go with one that is good but also reasonably priced.

Quality was a higher priority for me than price. If you feel that the quote you’ve received is way too high, of course you can try another seamstress, but remember that cost comes with experience which is typically well worth it.

I would ask family or friends near you to see who they’ve used for things in the past. I’m using the seamstress my bridal shop recommended (she won me over completely when she was able to show me pictures of my exact dress that’s she’s altered before-it has a lot of lace and I feel so much more comfortable working with somebody who’s had success with my exact dress). That being said, my sister and cousins have used a couple of different people for prom dress alterations and have had phenomenal experiences (their alterations for prom were more complicated than my wedding dress will be). I feel personal experience helps so much more than just reviews!

I couldn't afford the minimum quote that I was given at David's Bridal (where I got my dress). It was as much as my dress cost. I really didn't need too many alterations, so I reached out to my friends on Facebook for recommendations. An old friend of mine happened to work with a gal who did sewing on the side. So I contacted her. She's actually in the process of passing along the family business to her daughter, who went to fashion design school. So, I met with them, and they were so nice, and down to earth! They answered all my questions, and gave me a quote I could afford. A lot less than DB. It never hurts to reach out for other options. You may find an unexpected gift!
