Seafood Allergy. Leave Off the Menu?

Simone, on September 30, 2019 at 2:13 PM Posted in Planning 1 18
So, my aunt is severely allergic to seafood. She's one of those people who can't even be in the room where it has been cooked ecause the residual smell can trigger an attack. She is one of my closest family members and I'm wondering if I should leave it off of the menu all altogether or do the seating where there's no one at the table or surrounging table who will be eating seafood.

We are having a rooftop wedding so it's not an enclosed space where the smell is sort of trapped. Or should I leave it off the menu? If so, then the menu would be beef, chicken, and a vegetarian option. But I don't think many of our guests are vegetarian so they will most likely be choosing between the beef and chicken. What do you guys think?

I would just leave it off the menu. Even if you don’t seat her with people eating seafood, what if she gets up and moves around during dinner to say hi to someone or run to the restroom? I’m of the “better safe than sorry” camp.

I would leave off the menu. Better safe than sorry, especially when the consequences are this this large.

We didn't serve any seafood at our wedding, and we had 4 passed appetizers, an appetizer station, a salad course, two proteins & two sides. Most weddings I've attended didn't have seafood either, I think it's just easier to avoid it for allergies & taste aversions.

I have this issue where my FSIL is allergic. We have seafood for appetizers and on the dinner menu. We made the decision to leave it on. We really wanted the fish. We talked to her about it and she said as long as there is no cross contamination she will be fine. Out of my 95 guests, she is the only one with a seafood allergy. It really depends on how severe her allergy is.

I’d leave it off the menu. I agree that most weddings don’t have a seafood option. And it’s definitely not expected. You don’t need to have 3 entree options but if you want 3 you could always do pork tenderloin or a second chicken choice that is extremely different than the other choice. Also some vegetarian entrees are delicious. I think a lot of non vegetarians will order the vegetable Napoleon our venue is creating.

I second PPs that I'd leave seafood off the menu entirely. Your aunt will definitely appreciate that Smiley smile

If you leave it off, it should completely eliminate the possibility of cross contamination. If your aunt is that allergic, that’s probably a good idea. I would also notify your venue that you do have a guest who is allergic, just in case they use anything for flavoring that you don’t know about.

I would leave it off your menu. One of my BMs has a severe nut allergy, so we (unfortunately) had to bypass the delicious peanut butter filling that our baker offered. Better safe than sorry!

Speaking as someone who has a seafood allergy, I think its just safer to leave it off the menu. If someone complains about not having seafood, so what! Due to the allergies I know are coming, we are not having anything with seafood, nuts, (specifically almonds and peanuts), and avocado.

She'll be grateful, and you'll not be stressed about a potential situation.

Leave off the menu. Accidents and miscommunications can happen and the last thing you want is an emergency for your Aunt and that emergency taking over your wedding celebration.

I would leave the seafood off. It’s just too much of a hazard, what if she goes over to speak to someone at a table, and they have seafood? Or vice versa? I would just play it safe and do the chicken & beef

I have the same situation with my cousing fiance. I left it off the menu. Im going with chicken, beef, vegetarian, and incorporated a puertorican dish porkshoulder with rice.

I'd leave it off. My stepmother is deathly allergic to cilantro, so we made sure the caterer didn't use any at all, just to be very safe.

I would leave it off. If she's that allergic it's too big of a risk to take. What if the staff touches a seafood dish and then passes hers out?

I agree with everyone else, if her allergy is very severe I would leave it out.
