Scrapbook without page covers??

Trena, on March 6, 2013 at 1:45 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 16

Hey all! I have been trying to look for a scrapbook without the plastic protectors, to no avail. The only ones I've found are the creative memories ones, that are a little spendy for my taste. All other scrapbooks seem to have decided to use the 'top load' pages.

The reason I want one that is not top loading, or with the plastic protectors, is I want to use it for my guestbook/cardbook. And it is hard to look at cards later, if they are behind a plastic cover.

Any suggestions?

Are you having your guests write on little note cards?

You could always glue envelopes onto the pages with the guest's name if you wish to pull the cards out.

    Get some type of journal?

You can make one. What you would do is get two of the cardboard sheets that go between the pages. (places like Archivers let you have um) then you make that be your cover and then put pages in the middle. Archivers may have ones as well that are like creative memories but thats all I can think of right now

    Hayley,

I plan on having them write on note cards, yes. Those will be glued directly to the pages of the scrapbook. But the second part is the cards they give. I planned to glue the backs of the cards to the pages, so I could open the front flap when I wanted of each card. With a protective cover, I would have to take out the entire scrapbook page, then look at the card. I hope this makes sense?

And even with the envelope idea, I would be running into the same problem.

I love DIY, but I've made a book before (in high school), and it's a pain in the butt. I'd prefer just to buy the scrapbook.

A journal may be a good alternative. Though they don't usually open flat like a scrapbook does. I'll check etsy.

@Gina, I know! It used to be, that's all they sold. Now the top-loading have totally taken over. Which is fine, because they are better for scrapbooking, just not for what I'm doing lol

Thanks Hayley for the help! Smiley smile I actually made the guestbook for my FBIL's wedding, and did this same thing. I used a spiral bound journal, and the only problem was that all the bulk from the notes and cards was too much for it. There was no way to make the binding bigger like you can with a scrapbook to accommodate the extra bulk. But maybe I can have an etsy seller make sure there's extra room in the binding..... hmmm.

You could also print a LAY FLAT photobook from one of the photo book suppliers with a background of your choosing and use that as your 'blank' for scrapbooking.

or look for pretty sumptuous layflat blank art journals like paperblanks

Sketchbook is a good idea but you have to be careful because of the binding... if you put too much in it won't close because they wern't made for it and the pages aren't gaped so over time they will start to fall out from the stress put on the binding of the sketchbooks. So pay attention - wire binding doesn't have as much of an issue but again they wire spacing usually doesn't account that you are adding more to it so the pages will start to curl around the wiring.

If you google scrapbooking album you can get really great selections that don't have the plastic covers. If you put in photo ablum they always have that plastic covering because that is what makes it a photo album. BUT if you put scrapbooking album you can get the pre made ones that have the paper inserted already.

I am considering this idea as well, like in the picture below, and after the wedding, glue all of the cards into a scrapbook. Im an avid scrapper so this is right up my alley. But i have the same problem, they dont really sell the plastic-free scrapbooks anymore. Im considering getting one of the top loaders, then punching holes in the paper and putting it on the poles instead of the plastic piece. Then again i just might cop out and put the whole page inside the plastic. I have a hard time making up my mind.

You can actually take the pages out of a scrapbook. there is a little flap you lift up and unscrew, and you can take the pages out. You can then use scrapbook paper in its place and use a safe glue to attach your cards

I've considered doing that Joanna, but the paper then ends up being much shorter than the book, and a good chunk of the paper is hidden in the binding... and I am an avid scrapper, I know the in's and outs of most types of scrapbooks

@Christine, I've googled for hours, and that's why I'm here. I know the difference between a scrapbook and a photo album. The problem is most scrapbooks are treated more like a photo album now, where you put the page into a sleeve. I'm trying to avoid that.

I may cut a slice into each sleeve that I can put the front flap of each card through, so I can still open it. I've done that before, it's just a lot of work if I get a lot of cards lol. But I'm thinking I may just resort to that. Gives me a project to do after the wedding haha!

I was stating it in search terms not that you didn't know the difference... and I found a bunch... what exactly are you looking for? size/color? price? # of pages?

Thanks Christine, and I didn't mean that as mean, I promise!

I'm looking for either an 8x8 or 12x12, or something in between. Not sure on # of pages, which is why I was looking for a scrapbook: easy to add more.

Color, I'm open to, either white, or a sea blue/green, or grey. Those are my colors.

Do they seem to be with reputable sellers? And you must be a google god, because I couldn't find any!

The Hallmark scrapbooks that I used to get, like, 10 to 13 years ago were like that. They were the 'choose your own pages' so I always just got the scrapbook pages, not the pages with pockets. They then sold the protective sleeves separately but I didn't buy them since the pages already had holes in them and fit in the book.
