School Bus Transportation

SomethingBluth, on March 18, 2018 at 1:42 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19
I'm thinking of renting a couple of school buses to provide shuttle service for my guests to and from the hotel and our ceremony/reception space. However, my wedding is going to be a fairly formal event. I think that the school buses would be fun, but do you guys think that this sort of transportation would take away from the overall experience for guests at this formal event?

This sounds like a blast to me!!! It will
be nostalgic, convenient, probably more cost effective, and it sounds like it is what you want!

We are doing the same! We were able to rent two school buses for the entire day (hotel to church back to hotel for a gap in schedule (unavoidable unfortunately) and then to reception back to hotel and after party) for about the price it would have been to rent one motor coach for only to/from the reception.

I had the same concern at first, that it would take away from the formality of the day- but it was worth it to save the money and be able to provide full transportation for our guests since most are out of town.

Our wedding is next weekend so hoping it goes off without a hitch!

Sounds like fun! I’m all about formal events, but this would not be on my radar as a lack of understanding of formality. I would be happy to save money on uber!

That’s a good idea! I didn’t know that was ever an option.

I think the juxtaposition of the school bus with the formal wedding is super fun! I’m guessing most of your guests won’t have been on a school bus in years which adds to the nostalgic fun of it. You could add some ribbon, a banner, or window decorations if you want to dress it up a bit.

School buses are normally not air conditioned, and your wedding is in August? The very last place I would want to be all dressed up in August is riding in a hot-as-hades school bus.

There’s nothing fun about riding in a non air-conditioned bus in the summer that has tiny seats made for kids while I’m dressed up. Hard no.

I am also doing school buses and my wedding is formal , I see no problem with it, and I doubt people will care. If they are getting provided transportation and can enjoy their time and have some drinks I think they will be very happy.

Although like PP said, if it is super hot out it may be uncomfortable for the guests if it is a long ride with no AC, so I would keep that in mind.

I don't love school buses but I prefer that over having to make my own arrangements.

I wouldn't describe the school buses as "fun" though, they're a lot bumpier and cramped than they were when you were in elementary school. Your guests will likely side-eye you for trying to justify it as nostalgic rather than a cost-effective form of transportation.

I think it's fine. I'd way rather have the option of provided transportation, regardless of what it was, than have to figure out transportation myself. Also, it may just be where I live, but our school busses are air-conditioned so that wouldn't be a concern here.

Hi there. Just went through this process last week. I loved the school bus idea but our venue is about 20 minutes outside the city and no air conditioning plus June humidity made me look at other options. We were able to rent 2 air conditioned motor coaches for just a little more than the price of 2 school busses for the same period of time and I think our guests will be much happier! Best of luck!

School bus sounds fun! I really love the juxtaposition of formal wedding & not so formal transportation.

That being said, AC is a big consideration, particularly if you're in a warm place and a warmer time of year. Its probably something you can talk to the company you're renting them from, they may have air-conditioned buses.

You can rent coaches instead of school buses. But it does sound fun!

We considered school buses too, but there were too many drawbacks to that.

A lot of our guests are coming in from out of town, so they are staying in various places. We decided that we are going to set up an Event Code on Lyft to cover our guests' rides for the night. It's more cost effective and convenient too!

But really though, this is going to be the best bet and a lot less expensive at least in our area! Smiley shame

    Hello,

What school bus company did you use? We live in MD, and I'm trying to find a bus company for our May wedding.

I think the opposite of most here. I would think it's a little tacky considering the formality of your event. I would look for alternatives like uber/lyft credit, a nicer shuttle, or just have them deal with transportation on their own.

I just rented a school bus for my son's wedding for 7 hours in July. It seats 42 people, has A/C and was 1/2 the price of a shuttle/limo bus that we could book for 4 hours. Call First Student, they have a national office. Once you make the arrangements with them, they contact a bus garage near you, they look for the size bus you requested and THEN they send you an invoice confirmatoin. You don't actually pay them until 5 days before the wedding, and you can make changes up to 2 days prior to the wedding. You are allowed to decorate the inside of the bus!

Hi Courtney, where did you find the 2 air conditioned motor coaches? We're in the same predicament weighing the pros and cons of school busses right now. The non air-conditioned thing scares me.

    Thanks!
