School Bus to Wedding?

OGSue, on June 1, 2015 at 2:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

So FH and I's wedding ceremony and reception venue are at the same place, it's located approximately 40 mins from the city we live me. Since FH and I are spending the night and we don't require a drive to the reception we though instead of getting a limo we would instead use that budget to rent a bus to get our guests to the venue, pick up and drop off's to be at specific convienient locations for guest to cab the rest of the way and/or take a local bus that runs 24hours.

I was looking at costs and I noticed that the costs between a school bus and charter bus for the day are significantly different. FH wants to rent a school bus to save costs, but I think it might look tacky and would rather get a charter bus; and maybe opt for the school bus if we go over budget in other areas. Thoughts?

I've been to weddings with both and either way I haven't cared. It's a means of transportation and free for the guests so I'm sure they will just appreciate that. Go with the school buses to save some money. It was actually pretty funny with us all being on a school bus again, hadn't done it for years.

Personally, i hate the school busses. Let them drive there honestly. Forty minutes is nothing, and if I lived that close, I'd rather deal with myself than be part of a field trip.

The only thing I would say about school buses is they are designed for child sizzled bodies. The last time I rode on one (as a larger adult), it was pretty cramped. My FH is also 6'4" and had to sit in a bench alone because his knees didn't fit. Depending on your crowd, something to consider. The concept though doesn't both me!

I went to a wedding once that did it, they had two buses the buses left from one hotel that most people were staying at. the venue was a family farm so it was on back roads and kind of difficult to get to, there was limited parking for close to 300 people.

it was a good solution and worked out well. i am not doing transportation for my guests as there are only a handful staying in the area hotels and majority of people live near by (also my venue is easy to get to)

I'm not sure about a school bus wedding, but if you can get a party bus I think that would be great.

I have to agree with the child sized seats. I never loved riding the school bus as a kid. It just has that weird smell. I went as a chaperone on a class trip for my daughter. My knees were dug into the seat in front of me and I am only 5'7".

FH's cousin had a school bus at her wedding to transport guests from the church to the reception. It was a super classy wedding at this gorgeous church and the reception was at an oceanside mansion. I don't think anyone batted an eye at the school bus - if anything, guests thought it was kind of fun.

The wedding I was at the weekend before last had a school bus as transportation for the bridal party and the immediate family.

It was a little tacky, but only because the bus had "PARTY BUS" painted all over it but still clearly looked like a school bus inside and out.

ETA: Okay, I just realized you said it's only a 40 minute drive. I don't think you need transportation for something that close. I drive longer than that to and from work every day.

Ehh...a school bus at a wedding? I wouldn't do it, but then again, I'd be driving myself. My suggestion is trust your gut. If you're worried about it looking tacky, then your head is telling you that you're not really thrilled with the idea.

I've been to weddings with both a school bus and a party bus, and honestly, we never cared, as long as transportation was provided. Our venue is only 15 mins away, but parking is limited, and our crowd drinks, so we're getting a school bus. It kind of goes with our vibe (hey, we're getting married at a summer camp), but even if we were going more formal, I'd do a school bus, they're kind of fun!

I know it's not a long drive, and definitely a good point about it not being too far. Part of me wants to encourage people to not drink and drive (it's an open bar) and I'm pretty sure the venue does not have local transportation options, a taxi is a possibility but that would be a hefty taxi bill. I just want to make sure my guests have fun and get home safe.

@Klimberkat: the school bus definitely fits your theme.
