sc marriage license requirements

Lindsay, on February 8, 2018 at 4:55 PM Posted in South Carolina Planning 0 1
Hoping to get some insight on what is required for a marriage in South Carolina. Only have a very limited time to do this while visiting so I need to make sure it will work out.
For many reasons, we will be getting legally married next month and having our big celebration of marriage later on. For this reason, we want to make our legal marriage as small as possible. From what I’ve read, it seems like in SC you don’t even need any kind of ceremony or officiant, just a notary. That being said, can we apply for our license, pick it up the next day, and have it signed by a notary at the UPS store and turn it back in? Even with nothing ceremonial, no officiant, signatures only? It seems too easy so I wanted to clarify. Thanks so much!

I think the rules are different for people that don't live in SC, so I might not be the best answer. Always do your research,.

We went to the courthouse to apply for our marriage license. We paid for it and got our in about a week (it was mailed to us.) I think I remember them giving us the option to pick it up the next day, but I may be wrong. We opted to have it mailed b/c neither of us could make it there before 5pm (thanks to gov't buildings closing at 5, and we work 9-5 jobs. lol)

There are not strict requirements as far as who is able to sign on the license, as far as a notary. I know in SC your officiant doesn't need a SC ordination, but if you're doing a courthouse wedding, there's nothing to worry about there, either. There are no spaces on the license for a witness signature, so you may not technically need a ceremony. I'm not sure.

Always do your research, call a local office if you have questions. That way you know you're going to do it right! Hope this helps, and congratulations!
