Saving money with a *Limited* Open Bar?

A.Magill.Since.May, on March 8, 2017 at 12:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

So I get that a bar is expected to be available at a wedding. And a cash bar is just as bad if not worse than just having a dry wedding. What if the bar was limited to 2 types of wine, 2 or 3 types of beer, mimosas, (champagne for toasts), and maybe a couple of cocktails? I'm taking in the budget where I can, and serving limited options and mostly lighter alcohol seems like the best option to offer the guests a good time as a hostess and not break the bank.

I think that would be fine. It sounds like you would have an option for all types of drinkers!

That's acceptable Smiley smile We did something sort of similar. We bought a bunch of different liquors, a bunch of juices and sodas, and some other mixers (plus some wine and beer). The caterers wrote signs listing all we had and people could order drinks based off of all that was available.

    Thank you!

I'm learning SO much about etiquette in these forums, I feel like I should ask about everything! My mom eloped and neither of us have been involved in planning weddings, now we're trying to plan mine!

My wedding is also going to be late morning, with an early to mid afternoon reception. I feel like not serving a lot of liquor is acceptable for 2 in the afternoon lol

@Katie R. How soon does beer go bad? Is it weeks or months?

I googled it! So beer in the pantry goes around bad 6-9 months past the date on the bottle from what I understand.

I was also wondering that question @J, and found this answer:

    Beer Expiration Date

    (Unopened) Pantry Fridge

Canned Beer lasts for 6-9 Months (Pantry) 6 months-2 Years (Fridge)

Bottled Beer lasts for 6-9 Months (Pantry) 6 months-2 Years (Fridge)

Homemade Beer lasts for 6-9 Months (Pantry) 6 months-2 Years (Fridge)

or the "PAST DATE" which ever comes first.

ETA: sorry I tried to put that in a column forum and it didn't work. Hopefully you can read it.

That's perfect!~ A bonus of doing a couple of sig drinks is that most of them can be made in batches and either pre poured or quickly poured, which really helps with the speed of service too. One of my last spring weddings did a Blushing Bride (prosecco and Aperol; it's pink) and a vodka cocktail of some sort (it was blue). They had them on tables to begin with, and it was beautiful.

That sounds perfect! We are doing our wedding with wine and beer only. We wanted a couple a cocktails to be available but the venue doesn't allow hard alcohol. I ran it by my bridesmaids to see what they thought and they thought it was fine also. Cheers!

This is what we are doing. A couple of different wines, beer, and a his/hers/ours cocktail. Plus champagne option for the toast.

I went to a wedding where every guest was given one ticket for a free drink. We played ,"Can I please have your ticket?" all night.
