We only sent invitations. Our VIPs knew when the wedding was. For everyone else, two months before the wedding was plenty of time to get the best flights and hotels. (Seriously, specials aren't typically announced a year in advance!)

I'm really anti-STDs. It seems like I'm always seeing some story here about, "We really want to elope, but we already sent STDs." "We sent STDs to my coworkers, but don't want them to come now that I've left that job." "I sent an STD to someone who was close to me at the time, but the friendship has cooled." Having to invite a bunch of people you wouldn't have invited if you'd just waited until closer to the wedding can be a major expense.

We sent save the dates because every single person on our guest list needed to travel to our wedding. I was glad we locked in our guest list that way because it meant I could tell in laws we couldn’t add any more people because we already sent save the dates haha.

Our wedding is fairly local, so we didn't send any Save the Dates, just invites!

A lot of my family is going to be traveling, too. so maybe i should! my fiancé just doesn’t want to add another cost of shipping since we’ll still have the invites. but it seems it may be useful!

For us it was useful because we were able to put our wedding website on them so people could start looking at hotel and flight info. We sent them 7 months in advance.

We did save the dates because 2/3 of our guest list will be traveling from out-of-state. If a lot of your family will be traveling, I'd definitely send them! You can get them for pretty cheap though. We paid $97 for 80 STDs from Vistaprint during a sale, and I think you can find even better deals than that if you compare a bunch of sites (Minted, Shutterfly, Zazzle, etc.).

We definitely sent std's as our wedding is Saturday of memorial day weekend and wanted to make sure all our guests knew we'd be throwing the ultimate bash so don't go out of town.

We didn't send Save the Dates. All our VIPS (immediate family, friends, bridal party) knew the date and the information got to everyone by word of mouth. They're definitely not necessary.

We sent both. We had guests who had to travel, plus, I thought it was nice to give guests as much info as early as possible. Our STD's had our website on them, so guests could see our hotel room blocks and get everything they needed in advance. It really wasn't much of an extra expense and we thought it was worth it.

We sent them! We liked giving guests a longer heads up and to lock in our guest list! Also, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday coming up, you could save a bundle on them!

We weren’t going to send save the dates, but because our wedding is in August/end of the summer, we knew a lot of our guests would be planning trips and trying to do last minute summer stuff before kids go back to school.

Ours is in June, so maybe it’s a smart idea for us to do so!
