Draw up a guest list of all you wish to invite that you can actually fit in your venue and afford paying for. That should give you a number.

Once you’ve figured out who’s on your guest list for that 120, you can see who is in the same household/families/couples etc. for reference, we’re inviting 106 guests, but when save the dates went out I sent out 59 (and hand delivered one.) I had ordered 75, and I’m glad I did have a few extra as I did make a couple mistakes when addressing them.

Make sure you're not ordering a save the date for every person on your guest list! We're inviting 115 people, but we only need about 55 to save the dates, since a lot of people are couples or families and live in the same household.

Agree with others. Also, keep in mind you do not have to send STDs to ALL guests, but once you do, you are pretty much locked in to inviting them to the wedding. Daughter and SIL sent them to all VIPS and "absolutely certains" but held off on more casual local friends, figuring they didn't really need 6-7 months notice. That worked out well because by the time they were getting ready to send out the invitations, they decided to take some of those more casual friends off the list and add people whom they'd grown much closer to. (You don't have to send STDs at all -- they are completely optional, and if you're sending them, you don't have to send them to everyone....) Good luck!

Typically 1 per household unless you have an older guest sharing a residence with another guest. They can receive their own.
