  6-8 months before the wedding. Even if it is a destination wedding or people are local. Word of mouth and phone call make sure that a postcard or email doesn’t get lost.

  You can send an email a year out. Especially if there are some extenuating circumstances that could make travel more expensive, you want to give people time to prepare for that kind of money spent or get things cheaper.
