Save the Dates with Wedding Website, no Formal Invitation

JaS, on July 15, 2018 at 3:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

To try and save money, we are thinking about sending out Save the Dates that will have our wedding website. We would like our guests to use the wedding website to RSVP. We do not want to send formal invites but just a Save the Date with the website and they would RSVP online.

Do you think this is a good idea?

If so what wording could we use on the Save the Date, instead of "invitation to follow"?

You dont have to do a save the date, but you have to do an invitation.
People will be confused if theyre not officially invited.
For instance, FH and I received a STD for a Sept wedding, and by August we had no invitation. So we investigated and found out that the couple was no longer together and that the wedding was off.

I agree..do it the other way around..invitations instead of std. you could just put the website & stuff on a details card.

I agree that formal invitations are necessary. May I know how you created your wedding website?, I love the idea of having one for RSVPs!

Yes like PP said, a save the date is not an actual invitation. You can send an invitation with a photo of the two of you if that’s what you want, but you have to actually invite people or they’ll be confused. Wedding website RSVPs are just fine!

Just skip the paper STD’s and send out actual invites for people to RSVP online later. I created my own website and sent out the internet link to everyone with the words Save the Date and a little info on the first page of my website. As it got closer to send the invites out I revamped the wedding website with all the pertinent info, wedding party bios, registry, etc etc all that good stuff with a link to RSVP through AnRSVP. It has all gone perfectly except for those few stragglers who I’ve had to hound to rsvp.

Even if I got a STD that had me RSVP (who knows their availability that many months in advance?), I would still expect a formal invitation. When it didn't arrive, I would either think that my name was taken off the guest list or the wedding is off.

We skipped the save the dates and are sending formal invitations, I found a great deal for Zazzle on Groupon.

FWIW, maybe 1% of guests actually went to our website. i wouldn't rely on it.

As PPs have said, skip the STD and send the invitation instead. A STD is optional whereas an invitation is not. People can't accurately RSVP when they receive a STD as it's too far out and by the time it's closer, they will have forgotten they still need to RSVP.

Just let your VIPs know the date or send online STDs if you you want to give people a heads up and then send invitations at the appropriate time with an online RSVP. It'll save you the confusion from your guests, be more effective, and cost the same amount.
