Save the Dates timing

Danelle, on April 6, 2022 at 9:57 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

We are getting married September 2023 and I am trying to figure out the best timing to send out save the dates. I was thinking 8-9 months before, but that puts it right around the holiday season when people will be potentially getting a lot of holiday cards in the mail, and I do not want our save the dates to get lost in the shuffle or get stored away accidentally when the holidays are packed up!

Should I send them a year before (this September) or wait until Jan/Feb 2023. Almost all our guests will want to book a hotel (we believe) and some will be booking flights so I want to make sure they are sent early enough.

Any advice is much appreciated, thank you!

Save The Dates are usually sent 6-8 months in advance, but since many guests will need to book flights and hotels, I would send the Save The Dates closer to the 8-month mark in January or early February 2023.

I would send them right after the holidays to avoid that busy period. So January/February of next year (so 7-8 months in advance). That is still PLENTY of time for people to make travel arrangements.

Around January/ February would be totally fine. You could set up your wedding website and list accommodations in the meantime. The website could be circulated that through word of mouth so anyone wanting to get things booked early has the option, but 7-8 months is still plenty of time for people to make arrangements.

We're Sept this year and sent ours at the end of January! All of our guests are traveling in some capacity. About 45% would require flights, and the rest are at least 1 hour away. That gave plenty of notice to our guests. I thought most of our guests would want to book hotel right away but people haven't started yet really. Only a handful have booked using our hotel block.

I personally would send them earlier than everyone else says because it sounds like quite a bit of people have to make travel arrangements. We’re having ours 4 hours away so we sent ours a year out. Our wedding is in October which is peak season and we’ve already had family book hotel rooms. Also people book vacations and things sometimes a year out and you want them to know of your wedding as soon as possible in my opinion

I wouldn't send them out any earlier than January - for those traveling, some airlines might not even have September flights available to book before then and if you set up a hotel room block, the rate will be locked in (and you can try asking the hotel to add more rooms once the block fills, too).

I sent my save the dates out 11 months before the wedding (I’m getting married in September and sent them out in October) … only because I was excited and couldn’t wait lol … Save the dates are optional so I feel like it didn’t really matter if I sent them this early because I’m still going to send out invitations in a few months!

I just sent my save the dates out this week for my November wedding. I read it's appropriate to send save the dates out 6 months in advance but we have people from all over the country we know will want to attend so we are trying to give all of our traveling guests plenty of notice to make travel arrangements.

Anytime between 6-12 months is perfect. Also there is a misconception that they must be sent through the mail, when parents and past generations have successfully shared the information via word of mouth.

I would send them January/February 2023 which is the 6-8 month mark.
