Save the Dates in December...will they get thrown out?

Lauren, on October 11, 2018 at 2:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hi All! We were planning to send our Save the Date postcards at the end of December for our August wedding, since we want to give an appropriate amount of notice to family and friends that may be traveling from out of state.

I'm wondering if December is a bad time to send save the dates because people are getting so many holiday/Christmas cards in the mail? Will our save the date get lost in the shuffle and thrown out when the New Year rolls in? Let me know your thoughts, and whether you think we should stick with our timeline, send them out earlier, suck it up and pay the new stamp price in January Smiley smile

We sent ours around Christmas - mainly with Christmas cards. Most everyone we've visited since then still has theirs on their refrigerator.

The forever stamps will possibly go up 5 cents. I would send them out after the holidays.

You don’t need to worry about the postage increase. Just buy Forever Stamps before the price increase! And depending on how many guests you have, it could be economical to purchase your invite and rsvp stamps prior to the change too!

I noticed, that's kind of a lot! I'll have to make sure to buy all of the stamps we'll need for invites and thank yous before then.

Definitely! I was only worried about postcard stamps since we wouldn't use forever stamps for those, but it doesn't look like they're increasing that price. I'll for sure buy all of the stamps ahead of time. Anything I can do to save a few bucks!

I don't think it get lost in shuffle of holiday cards but if you're concerned, send it early December or after the holidays. I think people get them and either mark their calendar or throw them up on the fridge. You can buy forever stamps now to save the extra nickel per stamp. You can buy them now for your invitations as well. They have a "Love" forever stamp and a pretty "peace rose" forever stamp.

I'm waiting until after New Years to send out my invites. I wouldn't risk getting lost in the Christmas shuffle.

Could you send them earlier? Maybe late November? So they arrive before everyone else's holiday cards?

I think it will get lost in the mail for some people, I'd either send them in November or wait until January. My mail service isn't the best and I often lose packages and letters around the holidays. I bought my save the dates on sale Black Friday and my postal service LOST them so Vistaprint re-shipped them for free. So frustrating. I totally do not trust the mail at Christmas.

We were just having this same discussion! Our wedding is in August too and I'm dying to send out our save the dates but I also don't want them to get lost in the holiday shuffle! We decided to do it the week after the new year to make sure there is still a lot of notice for out of town guests as well as not just thrown out with the other Christmas cards

I think if people are the type to throw out a save the date they're going to do it whether its New Years or not. Unless the STD is a magnet or something like that I personally throw them out after letting them sit on my fridge for a month or two. By that point I know the date. I don't think you have to be worried about it being lost in the Christmas shuffle.

My wedding was the end of July and I waited until the beginning of January to send out my STDs so that they wouldn't get missed in all the Christmas chaos. I think people are organized enough to mark their calendars regardless of when they receive it but I figured there wasn't a hurry so why not wait and not risk it?

I’d either send them before the holidays or after.

I wouldnt send them during the holiday rush mostly because it is too easy for the postal service to lose them or deliver them to the wrong place or they would get very delayed or beaten up when there is that much mail going through. The very beginning of January or in November is just safer to mail things.
