Save the Dates- abbreviation rant

Jessica, on February 16, 2018 at 10:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 21
Ever since I started looking at the wedding forums months ago, one thing in particular always bugs me: the fact that many people abbreviate save the dates to STDs. Whenever I see STDs, I do not immediately think of save the dates. Do people not realize? Am I the only one who thinks it strange?
P.S. I do know that STDs are now called STIs.

Why is this a rant? Seems like a silly thing to be preoccupied with.

Being on a wedding forum, I always go straight to save the dates when I see STD. I do chuckle when someone posts something and includes “I gave them at STD three months ago!”

What a weird thing to rant about. People realize. It just doesn’t matter that much. Lots of acronyms stand for multiple things.

I think everyone realizes the other meaning of STDs. Well, hopefully.

YES! When I first went on here I was like whaaaaat. Totally had to google it (along with MOH, OOT, etc). I use it now, too, but I totally see where you're coming from. Some sentences still seem pretty funny using STD, depending on their wording.

Every abbreviation in existence is used in multiple contexts. Even on this site, BM sometimes stands for Bridesmaid and sometimes for Best Man, and of course BM also has a less than pleasant alternative meaning. You have to get over it. Abbreviations are shorthand, and you probably use a lot that have different meanings to other subgroups of people. Ex. At my work the demand planning team is called DP for short, and there is a form abbreviated with its first initials which are PIA. Half of the office probably doesn't even think of the sex-related meaning of those abbreviations, and those of us that do try our best not to ever let on that we do.....

I personally find it hilarious when people are seeking cheap STDs. I always want to recommend Craigslist.

Well, I realize what it also stands for...but I also realize that it's a whole lot faster to type a three letter abbreviation instead of type out "save the date" multiple times in one comment. It's all about context, and you get used to it.

HA HA HA! I JUST said this to myself when I was responding to a post. I changed how I wrote it because the abbreviation bugged me. That is hilarious! Great minds! LOL

It's been abbreviated this way on this forum for many years. Your rant changes nothing.

Funny story: I had a to-do list laying around the house and one of my items was “re-address STDs”. FH saw it and came to me the next day and was like “uh can we talk about this?” thinking the other abbreviation... I was on the floor laughing so hard when I realized what he was thinking. Oops!

Don't think the idea was to change anything just to rant. However, It Is an interesting post.

LOL I thought the same thing and had remembered seeing a recommended post about "wedding wire lingo" so I went to it, and saw what it meant. I also still think BAM is kind of odd because BAM! is very in your face. I don't know why we have to abbreviate everything!

I thought the same thing - I was like STD's? For real? I can't call a bridesmaid a BM either......

One of the first posts I read when I came on Wedding Wire was, "Don't ever address STDs while drinking an entire bottle of wine yourself" Mmmmkay. It doesn't bug or bother me but I can't ever use the acronym for it. I also never use the acronym "lol," either. But that's just me.

Hahaha!! This is what I have thought ever since I’ve been engaged! WE’RE NOT SENDING OUT STD’S AND WE AREN’T HAVING BM’S. That would be very concerning.
