Save the dates are important if you have out of town guests, are getting married on a holiday or weekday, or have a lot of friends getting married during that time. Did your announcements include your wedding date? I've never received a wedding announcement and didn't know people still sent them so I'm not sure the difference.

As PP mentioned, save the dates aren’t a necessity unless you’re having a destination wedding, lots of out of town guests, or you’re getting married on a week day. Wedding announcements typically go out after the wedding, to announce that there was one, so I’m a little confused about what information you included.
