Save the date / engagement announcements

Mrsmtobe, on January 1, 2019 at 4:29 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
Hey girls ,
so we made the engagement official on the 23rd of dec. now that the holidays and New Years have passed its time to buckle down and start the planning !!!
The wedding will be on February 2,2020

for the proposal he had a photographer and we got our engagement shoot ,so we are thinking of sending out either a save the dates or an engagement announcement (not really sure the difference)

so the the question is what is the difference and when should we send them out ?
We have our guest list pretty dialed in at around 150 guests which is the most we want so I figured we could start to trim it if we send it out soon
plus we have people out of state and out of the country being invited as well

thanks in advance

You don’t have a date until you have a signed contract with a venue. Save the dates go out 6-8 months before the wedding. Save the dates list the date of the wedding and the city and state and a wedding website if you have one. Everyone that receives a save the date must receive an invitation. So sometimes people only send them to VIPs so as not to be locked into a guest list. Engagement announcements used to be a thing people posted in the local paper but nowadays people just announce on social media.

Congrats. Love the date! I would skip the engagement announcement and go straight to the save the dates. We send ours 12 months prior to the wedding date. We do have more than 60% coming from out of town and some out of the country, so we had allow adequate time for people to plan and save for tickets. Most people send them 10-12 months before the wedding.
My recommendation would be to secure a venue first. You do want to mention the city and state.
Have fun with all the planning!!

Well I would just call/text family and close friends and tell them. I imagine word will spread.

Hi Ronit! The difference between an engagement announcement and a save the date is the STD acts as a warning for the wedding. An engagement announcement is more like "Hey, we got engaged!" as opposed to an STD, which is more like "Hey, we're engaged and here is a warning that you're invited to the wedding! Start planning!"

Etiquette says that you can send out save the dates anytime after the year mark, but usually four to six months before the wedding. Seeing as you have a lot of out of town guests, I'd send them earlier rather than later, so maybe closer to the year mark than the six month mark. I'd also suggest finding a venue or at least narrow it down to a city so that you at least put that on your save the dates.

Are you planning on including a picture on your announcements or STDs?

Yes we got some awesome shots at our proposal so definitely pictures will be on there , we are hoping to set the venue by the end of this month we’ve been looking the last four months , figured we’d send them out by the end of this month beginning of next ( there’s people from South America , Middle East, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico and more invited)

Save the Date is more like letting your guests know the date & location of your wedding (sent anywhere from 6-12 months in advance) so they can save it on their calendars and have more time to plan to go. Engagement Announcements aren't as common anymore and are more like letting guests know you got engaged but that's it. They are usually sent out shortly after the engagement. We have over 100 out of state guests so we sent out save the dates 10 months in advance with hotel information. We had two blocks set up and our wedding website was done.
