Save me from the Canon! (processional music help)

Michaila, on June 28, 2019 at 3:50 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 11

So we met with our music director yesterday and long story short, have to rethink our entire processional. I was thinking originally Vivaldi's Winter Largo for the bridesmaids and Ave Maria (Schubert) for me. We're getting married in the Catholic church so there are a lot of rules about what kinds of songs we can use. Music guy pointed out that Ave Maria isn't really a processional...and he's right. He's willing to do it if my heart is really set on it (kinda is, just because I haven't found anything I like better, but I'm open minded).

So here's the dilemma. What other options are there? I grew up playing classical piano, and I love classical music (as does my FH) and we regularly go to the symphony/ballet together. There will be no basic wedding music for us. No Canon. No Ode to Joy. No Jesu Jesu. No Trumpet Voluntary (mostly because that's too stiff and formal for me and reminds me of pomp and circumstance and I'm not the queen). No Here comes the Bride (kind of banned, long story, don't like it anyway). My mom doesn't like the Midsummer wedding march but I kinda do mostly because it's Shakespeare and ballet, two things I like a lot, but it's really more of a recessional.

I think the church would be okay with any classical music (we have a pianist and a flute for musicans so there's that and we can't play recordings). We can do any church song basically, any hymn, and I'm pretty sure any folk song or Irish tune will fly as it's St. Bridget's and is big on Irish (plus our families are both Irish). I don't want words.

Any ideas? Please help.

I really love Clare de Lune. It's so beautiful, and often overlooked, in my opinion. I also love the Bach cello concerto in G major. So beautiful!! Good luck with your search!

I agree with Cristy, Clare de Lune is gorgeous. Maybe listen to various Bach pieces? Bach is almost always accepted by the Catholic Church. Have you done a google search for classical wedding music? That might be a good place to start. Are there any hymn arrangements that you would be ok with? That could be a good compromise as well. Good luck! I was the pianist for two of my friends Catholic weddings and nailing down acceptable music was so difficult, especially because I'm not Catholic.

One of my favorites! Another favorite (because it's so simple) is "Gymnopédie No.1," by Erik Satie. Also, “Arioso,” by Johann Sebastian Bach

If you had a full symphony or could play a recording I was going to recommend
"Music for the Royal Fireworks, HWV 351," by Georg Friedrich Handel, but - with a piano and flute only that may be tough lol.

I'm not really feeling Claire de Lune - but I will have a listen to more Bach. I did like Arioso just wasn't sure if it would sound good on flute and piano. I've gone through my entire ipod of classical music and google and found some ideas, mostly from Tchaikovsky's ballets. But I'm also finding myself drawn to simple stuff like Loch Lomond, The Water is Wide, Be Thou My Vision - so now I'm kind of searching for Irish hymns to see if anything comes up...here's a working playlist of ideas:

I'm walking down the aisle to Ave Maria! It was my grandmother's only wish for my wedding so I put my foot down. If you love it, do it! It's such a beautiful piece of music.

I don't know about Catholic rules, but Greensleeves might work?

I also was going to suggest Be Thou My Vision when you mentioned possibly wanting an Irish song. That is one of my favorites. I grew up singing the hymn Morning Has Broken and I think that is also pretty.

If he says he'll do it and that's what you want, that's what I would do. Then again I have no idea about the catholic church. I hope you find what you're looking for. Good Luck!

Go with Ave Maria, its what your really want anyway, and the Church seems to be ok with.
