Sandals vs Couples?

Mrs H., on November 23, 2010 at 1:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 37

Our travel agent is primarily suggesting Sandals and Couples resorts for our honeymoon. Has anyone been to one of these? Is one better/nicer than the other?

I havn't been to either. But... I know people that have been to both. Couples is only in Jamaica and is supposed to be VERY romantic and intimate place. Sandals is more grand as the resorts are bigger and you have more options as far as locations.

Never been to either- but let know what you decide. We're looking at the same things!

I haven't been to niether but DH & I are going to the Sandals Royal Bahamian in April. Have you check tripadvisor.com for reviews on the Couples resorts? Do you know where you want to go?

I know that I DON'T want to go to Bahamas. I went twice in college. So we're looking at Jamaica, St. Lucia and maybe Turks/Caicos, or St. Marteen. I know a big hurricane messed up St. Lucia so I'd hate to be on my honeymoon while they're rebuilding the resort.

So far I'm thinking Jamaica. Mainly because we can be on the beach by 1pm with drink in hand! Traveling to a farther island means a lay over in San Juan and scary puddle jump over to tiny island. But you really get that "away from it all" feeling.

If anyone's interested, here's a listing of caribbean all inclusives, and you can sort by star. Then look on the right, and see if it's adults or couples only.

@ Michelle, was the Bahamas that bad? Or you just want to go some where different?

We haven't been to those, but would love to hear your experience with whichever you guys choose. I've been to AI in Mexico, and loved it, the food could have been better but overall it was amazing!

Couples is only in Jamaica, their resorts are slightly more inclusive (they include some additional off-property tours that are not included with Sandals), their prices tend to be better, and they have a more low-key quiet kind of luxury vs. Sandals over-the-top style. Hope that helps!

@Annie, thanks! I'm leaning towards Couples San Souci, it includes scuba diving, and glass bottom boat rides Smiley smile

@Barefoot, the Bahamas are beautiful! I just want something new!

I'm definitely up for the low-key quiet kind of luxury. The couple San Souci is 5 star! I'm not really into the big resorts, but I like that it's couples only/honeymooners. Not like the crazy hedonism resorts. Yuck.

You'll LOVE San Souci, then. Have a great time!

Thanks! I was worried for a minute!

Funny thing about those hedonisim ones, I was searching for Hotels and one of the descriptions for it was 'threesome freesome!" I almost peed myself laughing so hard! I think I even had 'honeymoon' in the search definer thing...

@Michelle- That sounds like a good place. How much do these AI resorts go for? How many days are you planning on staying?

They're ranging from $3-6K for one week. Couples in Jamaica is quite a bit cheaper (in the 3s) than the Sandals in St. Lucia, but I wonder if these are including airfare, and that's a big difference? Not sure, will have to do more research!

I have been to sandals in Negril. I went with my family and it is VERY geared towards families. They have a live sesame street show as well as planned family events and activities like board game competitions and dance lessons. I dont know how romantic it can be however they do have adult only events (i didnt go to any LOL I was 20 and felt they were for "old" people) but I do know there are tons of kids around. But it was a great time and there was always something to do. the food was really good too. The staff is also very friendly and interact with you your whole stay. I am looking into the Sandals at Turks and Ciacos for my honeymoon.

Cheryl, which Sandals specifically did you go to? Sandals Negril Beach Resort and Spa is supposed to be couples only, no children. Are you sure it wasnt Beaches Sandy Bay or Beaches Negril Resort and Spa? Both of those are kid friendly.
