Same exact dress?!

Elizabeth, on January 6, 2020 at 7:17 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
I showed my dress to my sister-in-law and she informed me that it is the exact same dress she wore when she married my brother. I am devastated. I am no longer in love with my dream dress. To hear someone you've never liked tell you your dresses match... part of me thinks that when I showed her my dress she should have kept her mouth shut and just let me have my moment. I mean honest opinion, was there really any reason for her to tell me that? I never would have known had she just stayed quiet. If someone showed you their dress and it matched yours would you tell them?

I probably wouldn't want my sister-in-law wearing the same dress that I did to my wedding so probably would have mentioned that it was the same dress. How did you not realize it? Did you not attend their wedding that you saw her in the dress?

Their wedding was 8 years ago. I had no clue until I looked back at their pictures.

Oh okay. Well I am sure you would rather know now then if you looked back at photos and realized you worn the exact same dresses. I would look for a different dress that might be the same style, but different enough that it doesn't look like you worn the same dress as her.

I don't think she was wrong in saying it. It's something I would've casually said not being malicious or anything. I don't think she meant it out of spite.

Especially if it was 8 years ago, I wouldn't remember and I seriously doubt anyone else will. Is it actually the EXACT same dress? Most manufacturers/designers change their styles every couple years or so, and a LOT of wedding gowns are pretty similar to others. Honestly, even if it is exactly same, I'd laugh it off with, "Wow! We both have such great taste!" and move on.... NO ONE else will notice the similarity, and if she makes an issue about it, it makes her very petty and others will see that. Congrats!

I think it’d be natural instinct to say someone had the exact same dress. But, barring an exceptionally unique dress, I would say nobody will even notice. Soooooo many wedding dresses look alike these days. Plus, you can put the same dress on 4 different people and have it look completely different on each one! But, if it really bothers you, I would say you were lucky to find out now - At least now you have time to find a new dress if you want to go that route. And it would have been much more upsetting to have had her tell you on the day of your wedding while you were in the dress!

Unless you bought your dress preowned, it likely is NOT the exact same dress. New dresses are released 2x a year and I believe after about 2 years the samples are sold off or donated because they can no longer be ordered. Your dress may be similar, or she’s just being a jerk.

And 8 years ago is a long time! Even if similar, nobody will remember. Especially since you probably don’t look alike or have the same bridal hair, makeup or accessories.

If you’ve never liked her, why did you show her your dress? I wouldn’t share more wedding details with her. She sounds unsupportive.

I feel like if you didn’t even remember that she wore the same dress, no one else will either (except her and maybe your brother). If anyone DOES recognize it for some reason, they’ll probably think you borrowed her dress and that it was deliberate. I wouldn’t worry about it!

I agree with this. you can also add things to change it up a bit. you are two different people so you will look different even if its the "same" dress.

I actually don't think it's wrong of her to say it.
But I do see your view on how it makes you feel like you wouldn't want to wear a dress someone else you know had.
Is there a way you can style it that'll make it different? A belt? Sleeves? Different straps?
