Salons

Any suggestions for booking hair and makeup on my wedding day? being that I live out of state I would be coming down a few months prior for a trial run. (There is never any guarantee that the same person will still be working there though. It’s a gamble. My concern is all these big salons are catering to large bridal parties. It’s just me and maybe my sister (my only bridesmaid). $700-800 for my plain, fine hair. There is nothing anyone can do to my hair to make it worth that kind of money and it’s outrageous. I do need a professional though. I found one place in Santa Ana that is actually affordable called Alkali Salon. They were super responsive and booked me a trial with no deposit required. The thing is I’m curious if that means this isn’t the best choice. The website says they do bridal hair and has some photos but i cannot find wedding reviews at all. That concerns me. I def think a place that handles bridal parties is the smart choice if I could afford it. I’m also worried there are no bridal reviews on the site. Only reviews from regular cuts and not all were good. Thoughts?

Have you tried looking at Hair stylists that do not work for a salon? I found alot of self-employed HMUA through Wedding wire. They all had a ton of reviews and were reasonably priced, ranging from $180-$300 for bridal HMU.

Many brides do not have a big wedding beauty team; some are more comfortable going solo to their regular stylist. Really, anyone (practiced) can do bridal updos and style. But, I do think more time should be allotted since you'll be heavily photographed (hence the rise in price). Take a look at individual stylist's album/ Insta of their completed work, and less with written reviews (haircuts are diff). There's a certain negative type that write reviews. Some salons have an in-house makeup artist so you can knock out 2 trials at once. Best wishes.

Thank you Candace. Did you search the same way, for example, hair and beauty?

Look for an independent stylist and makeup artist. The reason salons charge so much for those large parties is because generally they are shutting normal business operations down for several hours to do work for one client. You could also call around to some that may have quoted a higher ballpark and explain the situation. You just want to get hair and makeup done, other than potentially wanting a trial the appointment probably doesnt need to be any different for such a small party that if you'd booked for a special occasion up-do, which they do during normal business hours anyway.

Yes, under hair and beauty. I also searched on Instagram by following hastags for my area. For example, I'm in Austin so I followed #atxweddings #hillcountryweddings #atxhairandmakeup... Instagram is a major marketing tool for small businesses and so any freelance hair and makeup artist will be on there using hashtags for their area. Try that!

I asked my regular stylist how much it would be to do xyz to my hair and she said $30. Then when I told her it was for my wedding she forced me to fill out all this paperwork And the quote was $160.

They automatically assume that because it’s a wedding you’ll have 2 moms and 6 bridesmaids coming along. I literally just wanted it to be me. Alone. 1 person. She opened the store early for me and spent about an hour and a half on me.
