Salon Seamstress Vs. Private Seamstress for gown alterations

Brigitte, on February 15, 2021 at 12:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

I need input!!! Trying to decide between having my dress altered/hemmed by the salon I bought it from or from a private seamstress that works out of her home. Has anyone thought about this or done this before? I heard the main difference is price, with private being cheaper. The private seamstress I'm looking into is a licensed business through our county, she just operates out of her home.

Thoughts??

Personally I have always found that a personal seamstress is a bit more dedicated to you. They have a reputation to uphold and are a bit more personal that a salon even though they also have a reputation to manage. Just my opinion.

If you have a good, reputable private seamstress I would go with them. A lot of times the salon seamstress is someone who has their own seamstress business but is contracted through the salon. The salon will up-charge you so that they get a percentage of the payment to the seamstress.

As others have said, I prefer private seamstresses over a salon one! I like how personal your own seamstress is, and I feel they tend to care more about their work. They also tend to not upcharge like a salon does.

A private seamstress is nearly always better. They focus on you. The salon seamstress focuses on getting a commission from the store (their main employer) so the customer service is not the same, and if that means not altering it properly so you have to buy a new dress then that is how they do their work, including why they charge extra.

I used a seamstress working out of her home and it was half the price of the salon! She also was super fast, super helpful and very accommodating. Just make sure to read Yelp reviews and such, specifically look to see if they have good reviews on wedding dress alterations.

I’m leaning towards the private seamstress. My experience is they’re more dedicated & really put their heart into their work.
