Salmon and Mashed Potatoes

J, on January 6, 2020 at 11:34 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13

So, we just did a tasting with our caterer and are starting to build our dinner menu. We're potentially going with chicken, salmon, and beef entrees. For sides, we determined that both the chicken and beef go well with mashed potatoes, and the salmon goes well with rice pilaf. BUT, we just found out that we can only choose one side dish that will go with every entree, and having an additional side (rice pilaf) would be an extra $4 per person charge (for about 100 guests). So my question is, does salmon go well with mashed potatoes? Is it weird? Or should I suck it up and pay the extra $400 for the rice pilaf to go with the salmon?

I don't think it's that weird. If you're worried, rice pilaf definitely goes with all 3.

Sorry to say, but no, mashed isn't a good side for Salmon, a rice is what people would expect to compliment fish!!!

Are you offering options to guests or is it dual plated. I ask because you have to give a head count 30 days out (most venues) in which case if it is salmon OR beef then you may only have 5 of your 100 guests wanting salmon - which wouldn't be much for the additional cost.

I agree with PP's, mashed potatoes go perfectly fine with salmon. That's literally what one of my exes would order at every single restaurant we went to lol

Nothing wrong with salmon and mashed potatoes (I just had salmon piccata with mashed potatoes and it was SO GOOD)

Sometimes when I’m torn about meal selection at weddings I choose for sides and I ALWAYS potatoes over rice! Sometimes i think I’d prefer fish but it has boring rice as a side so I get whatever the thing is with potatoes! 🤣
Long story short, don’t sweat the sides !

Hit enter too soon, my last line was going to be: if someone doesn’t want the fish simply bc it has the “wrong” side, they can choose a different entree.

I am offering entree options (either/or) to guests, but unfortunately the way my venue prices the meals is that I pay extra $ per person (my entire guest count) to offer an additional side option!

Mashed potatoes go with anything. People eat that with salmon frequently.
