Rural wedding do i need a shuttle for all guests?

Daniel, on February 1, 2022 at 9:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
We are having our wedding in Park City, UT. The ceremony is taking place at the top of the resort easily accessed by car 11 miles from the suggested hotel or just 5 miles if they stay in town. The reception is 20 miles from there. The main hotel is literally right in the middle of each location. A shuttle would run us over $2k. I don’t think we should nor can we really afford the added cost. My fiancé is adamant we have to at least offer a shuttle from the reception back to hotel 9 miles away still running about $1k. But then how would people get back to pick up cars? and not everyone will want to leave at the same time. Uber and Lyft aren’t really an option. Thank you

This really depends on your guests and whether they 1) are from the area and 2) whether or not they plan to drink (or you plan to serve alcohol).

People who live in the west or in rural areas are used to driving long distances to get just about everywhere, so that schedule may not phase them at all. If you have a lot of out of towners who aren’t familiar with the area, they may be daunted by the schedule and all the places they need to go. If the weather is bad, for example, people may opt to skip a portion of the day. Ditto for elderly relatives who don’t like to drive after dark. You know your crowd best and how this might apply to your guests.
The benefit of having transportation is that it makes it super easy for guests to get everywhere. And super easy usually translates into better attendance and people staying later at the reception if they don’t have to worry about driving home, especially if alcohol is served.
Ultimately, your people will want to see you get married so they will do their best to get where they need to be—shuttle or not!

If Uber and Lyft aren't available, I would be offering a shuttle - there needs to be some alternate form of transport other than guests driving on their own and if taxis or car hire (Uber) aren't an option, I would definitely arrange a shuttle.

Will guests have cars? If the majority are flying in and won't have rental cars, maybe I would consider a shuttle. But if everyone will have a car, rental or their own, and there is ample parking at both places, I don't think a shuttle is necessary. Some families will naturally car pool. I would consider it a luxury to provide a shuttle if you can afford it.

If there's no Lyft, Uber or cabs, then I think you should offer a shuttle if you're serving alcohol. It's only fair if there are no other options for those that want to have a drink. If cabs are available, then it's not a big deal.

This. Easy transportation into rural areas will give you better attendance-- invitation acceptances and they will stay into the evening. There are many posts of sad brides whose guests leave after cake. If you have out of town guests flying into Salt Lake, then driving into the mountains of Park City, you are asking a lot for them to drive into the country as well. It may be easy for you, but it is dark and daunting for out of the area guests. If there are no cabs, Lyfts, or Ubers, that is a greater indication that the area is off the beaten path, and you should provide assistance as the host. Best wishes.

100% agree with this. Asking guests to drive close to 40 miles round trip through the mountains isnt going to go over well for attendance unless everyone is from the area and already expects it. The shuttles dont even have to be fancy, my friend rented school buses for the 35 minute drive from her ceremony/reception location back to the suggested hotel and it ran her $1000 for 100 guests.

Due to the driving distance I would say you need to run shuttles or car services at least from the hotel to the reception and back. Anyone staying elsewhere can be responsible for their own transportation. But asking people to drive almost 40 miles round trip in a day is a little much. Especially if you plan on serving alcohol or your reception running late. It's a common courtesy of hosting in an area thats not super accessible even if it is expensive. Look into renting school buses instead of actual shuttle services. My friend did that and only paid $1000 for 100 guests to make a 35 minute drive back to their hotel.
