Rule of thumb with cakes

Steffane, on February 21, 2016 at 8:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

What is the general rule of thumb when you have a grooms cake and wedding cake? Do you assume anything as far as how much cake to get? We are having 200 guests. Would we get a wedding cake to feed 200 and a grooms cake or is that overkill? We are going cake tasting next week.

We are having 250 guests so the wedding cake feeds 200 and grooms cake 100. FH thinks it's too much cake but rather have more than run out lol

Following!! We had our first cake tasting yesterday and they said with us having about 150-200 ppl they suggest a cake that serves 100. Saying that from what they've heard and seen, most cases the couple takes home a lot of cake otherwise. But I'd feel bad if someone wanted cake and we ran out...

Make sure to ask how big each slice of cake is expected to be for each guest. One baker I spoke to assumed 1inch by 1inch slices. I'm like WTF? That's not enough cake for me....

Steffane, I went to a bridal show today and they were talking about the amount of cake. For 200 guests, your wedding cake AND the groom's cake should feed 200 total. Not 200 for the bride's cake and 200 for the groom's cake.

I don't think you should order less than your number of guests and assume they won't eat it... I would feel terrible if we ran out. I personally feel like we will be taking some home but better safe than sorry

A standard slice of wedding cake is 1"x2"x4". A quick and easy way to visualize that size is to picture making a peanut butter sandwich with one slice of bread folded in half. That's approximately the size of the standard slice. That said, different bakers use different serving sizes, so it is important to ask the baker.

Steffane, is your wedding cake just one flavor or multiple flavors?

I would probably have the wedding cake serve 150 and the groom's cake serve 75-100. I just wouldn't feel comfortable not having enough for at least one slice for every guest. And hey, leftover cake isn't the worst thing in the world, right?

We haven't gone tasting yet to know. I'd like the grooms cake to be chocolate on chocolate and our wedding cake will likely have two flavors. Traditional wedding cake and something light and fun like lemon and raspberry.

We're not getting a groom's cake, BUT. We're having 90-100 guests and our wedding cake will feed 60. So we're buying extra 9" and 6" cakes to set on cake pedestals near the main wedding cake to make up the number of servings (plus a few to feed vendors and to take two slices with us for breakfast the next morning). All the cakes will be the same flavor (vanilla & champagne). Also, we're operating on party-size servings, not wedding-size.

I always think it's weird when people are advised to have fewer servings than they have guests. Are they assuming there are other desserts or that wedding cakes have to be sad and dry?

I've been to tastings and ordered my cakes already. We are going to have enough for one slice per guest. We are serving a full dinner and alcohol so it's likely some won't even want cake and some people often share their piece.

Usually they say you'll have 85% of your guest list come, so that's where the recommendation to buy less cake than invited guests come from.

We're planning to go just slightly over our full guest count though, since we're inviting a small group (33 invited). Chance are we'll have a ton of cake left over---don't forget to buy cake boxes for the reception so you have a way to take it home or give some to your guests.
