RSVP Question..Food Intolerance?

chelsey, on August 15, 2017 at 2:47 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

So rsvps are a ways off but I'm having a little bit of an issue. I want to be aware and friendly to all who have food intolerances and allergies. I was going to just use online rsvps for everyone except those who might have difficulty with technology. The last four family weddings have had online rsvps as the only option. My problem is that I can't figure out a way to put that as an option when they rsvp. Should I just send paper rsvps to everyone? Maybe leave a note on the rsvp page to contact us if they have a food intolerance issue?

ETA: I'm using the knot for my wedding website if that helps.

I would just have them contact you directly if there is a dietary restriction. You'll likely need to have a conversation and want to tell them exactly what their options are anyway.

So would you just put that on a details insert? "Please contact ---- if you have any dietary restrictions"

Just do paper. I wrote "kindly inform us of any dietary needs" on ours.

I think you may be opening yourself up to a lot of headaches. I would not include anything about food intolerances but make sure to let immediate family know so they can relay/pass it along to others. I think it's so kind of you to care this much about your guests!

I am asking for 'dietary restrictions'. I will accommodate any and all reasonable responses.

Such a good idea.. my FH is deathly allergic to peanuts and my SIL is a vegan. We went to a wedding over the summer and FH couldn't eat much and my SIL texted the bride a month before and asked if there would be a vegan option.. the bride replied "there will be salad.. or there is a vegan restaurant down the street you can eat at before the ceremony" like really? She ended up accommodating her with a vegan dish but how rude to not think you have to accommodate your guests from the beginning!

I love that you are going to ask! Your guests will really appreciate it

I had a chicken, beef, vegetarian, and food allergy option on my online rsvps. People who selected food allergies sent me messages on what issues they have. It all worked out, and now my guest with celiac disease will be able to eat dinner with us.

ETA: I used The Knot for my wedding website. You can enter in custom items on the food option under the RSVP tab

I wouldn't offer and let them come to you... I can't have eggs, but I never request or assume that anyone will make special menu changes just for me. I'll just ask the menu, and if I'm worried about what is being offered (like fried chicken and waffles are a complete no go) I will just plan to eat before/after or bring some food to hold me over.

I also know there are some vegetarians in my wedding, so I'm doing a buffet where they can choose not to eat the meat. The gluten free can have salads and snacks. Otherwise things can get crazy when it comes to who can eat what and how.

You can either do it on your site if you are planning to do one, or do something like this with paper RSVPs. I was able to design this on the VistaPrint site using their design template and adding fields. I have a lot of friends with food concerns and the caterer needs the information to adjust. My mom has a spreadsheet that I made for her that corresponds so she is able to tick off the responses as she receives them.

My aunt suffers from a severe form of celiac disease. When choosing my caterer I specifically asked what options would be gluten free and 85% of my food will be (except for the vegetarian option and rolls). That's the only person I know of that's being invited with specific dietary concerns. I do have a few vegetarians coming, and there is plenty for them to eat. The only group that won't have any options is vegans, and I don't any who will be invited is vegan.

@Candace, do you realize that many many salad dressings have gluten in them? Please please make sure you have dressings that do not, otherwise there will be nothing for your gluten free guests to eat.
