RSVP or R.S.V.P

Happy2b MRS.Henderson, on February 27, 2014 at 9:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

Hi ladies what is your take on how to place the rsvp with or without the periods. I am doing my rsvp's and for some reason it does not look right without the periods. Help please is it your own personal preference or is one the correct way?

Ours has R.S.V.P. as it technically is an acronym. It is French (répondez s'il vous plaît) which translates to the formal "respond if you please"

Ours says RSVP, but that is how our template allowed us to do.

I think it's technically R.S.V.P. but it has become some common to drop the periods, that's what people always use. I didn't include the periods.

Thanks! our STD has us pinkey swearing on the back (show off the ring a bit) so it said "Pinky-swear you will be there" so it ties in. Good luck and just pick what looks nice to you

Generally, RSVP is used without the periods. And Stobe, you're mostly right that it's an acronym (I think it would actually be an initialism), but most acronyms leave off the periods--think FBI, PR, CNN, etc. The U.S. (see what I did there Smiley winking) adds periods for style in certain instances, U.S./U.S.A. being one of them. So you can use RSVP or R.S.V.P., whichever suits your style, but generally you'll see RSVP.

Gentleman here...etiquette receives RSVP, R.S.V.P, r.s.v.p., and R.s.v.p. for the written initialism. However, the abbreviated RSVP, uninterrupted by periods, is formally exercised by the Oxford English Dictionary and Associate Press Stylebook (AP style is the grammar bible and subsequent usage guide for journalists and authors to maintain brevity with consistent accuracy).

Unless you are hosting a formal, black tie wedding, use which ever acronym suits your style. Cheers!
