RSVP Envelope Too Small for Mail!

Taylor, on July 18, 2016 at 10:50 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

I just got my wedding invitations in the mail today and they are absolutely gorgeous. I was so ecstatic about them that I failed to realize till later in the night that the RSVP card envelopes that I was sent don't meet the minimum requirement for the USPS. I of course want the guests to send these back to me. They are 4.33x4.33 inches.. Has anyone else ran into this same issue or have any advice? I'm not sure whether I should buy bigger envelopes and deal with it looking weird or if possibly the USPS would send them even if they are a little smaller than the minimum.

You could do what my tacky af cousin did and just throw everything into a dirty manila envelope.

But in all seriousness, I just received a tiny thank you card today from a grad party so that went through fine. I'd go to the actual office and see what they say before you invest more money.

Did you order from a US company? If so, I'd complain to them and request that they provide acceptable size envelopes.

I would just put the rsvp card and envelope in the same envelope as the invitation. I think that's pretty normal to do. ETA: Yea I see what your saying now. Sorry it's been a long day haha

I would talk to the post office.

Worst case, I'd put a regular envelope in the invitation envelope for it to be sent back in.

I would call the company and see if they can send you envelopes that are an acceptable size. You don't want to send these out, and then have all the RSVPs get bounced back to your guests because they are too tiny. As a stationary company, assuming they are based in the US, they should have knowledge of what is USPS acceptable and what isn't.

SoontobeMrsS: the problem is that the USPS might not process/delivery the RSVP back to the OP because of the envelope size.

Yep just bring them in to a post office and if you are close enough to another one bring it there to.

Did you order any extras or have one to spare? I'd take it across town and mail it to myself and see if it showed up. Add a little cheery note inside it too so it makes you smile when you get it.

My RSVP are 5 1/4 by 3 3/4 so pretty small as well and I've gotten more than half of them back. RSVP deadline hasn't passed yet so more should be coming shortly.

Check with your post office but I think I'll be fine.

Taylor- Mine were about that small and I had no problem. Check with another post office or I like Kari's idea.

@Kathryn do you remember how small your's were? I am going to go to the post office during my lunch hour today to see what they have to say.

@Katherine I bought them from a site based in the US, but their production is in China.

@Bailey did your RSVP's end up being a lot smaller than the envelope? I had one girl suggest I cut and use tissue paper if I use a bigger envelope, almost like a filler.

    Kari has a great idea!

We recently just had to reorder envelopes since the ones we got the the invites weren't working (we had a pretty dark gold one... but my printer wasn't great at printing on it and you could hardly see it.)

I ordered from envelopes.com... I may have a coupon from them too (i'll have to check the box and see if it's still there) you're welcome to if you need to reorder envelopes!

Definitely check with post office first, then the company you ordered from. Hopefully one of the two will be able to work with you.

It may be more of an issue that they are a square size. Postal machines can't handle square sized envelopes well (hence the additional fee for even larger square sized envelopes). I would definitely complain to the invitation company. They should know better. Some of your rsvp envelopes may go through ok, but there is a risk of rejection. And how the postal system is now, the rejections may not get returned to sender for a couple weeks.
