Round vs. square table (and table cloths!)

drmariner, on May 20, 2016 at 9:10 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 6

Table shapes and other things I never thought I'd worry about.

What do you think is best round or square or no difference? My mom specifically requested not rectangular because she feels the folks at the end get half the convo opportunities. So I thought - round. But your wedding planner said round tables have less space and get crowded compared to the same size square table. What do you guys think?

Our venue has 4-person dark wood tables so I figured maybe we could save on rentals and pair four of them into squares - 8 people per big square. The WP desperately wants to put 10 people per square table (why? It offends my sense of symmetry) plus I wouldn't want to sit anyone (except perhaps a small child) at the intersection of two small tables. So then I think, will partially filled tables look funny? Leading me back to circles...

Finally, can you mix and match tablecloth and table shapes? Google images seems to suggest yes...

Am I overthinking? What do you think? Thanks!

I love round tables. No one has to be on an end or feel like they are out of the conversations. I wouldn't mix and match the table cloth shapes with the actual tables though.

I thought we were doing rectangular tables until FMIL asks we if can do round (ask telling lol). She says it makes it feel more like a wedding. She also says she can get 10-12 people on the round and not as many with the rectangular. Ok...round tables it is!

She is also doing round table cloths on the bottom and square ones in a different color on top. I was surprised...it actually looks pretty nice.

I prefer round or rectangle. Since rectangle is not an option, I vote round.

I love round tables and that is what will be at my wedding venue. That way everyone can see each other and converse.

But are square tables that different in terms of being able to converse with everyone?

I feel you so hard with that "intersection of two tables" business - stick to your guns and do 8 if you go with square! I don't think there is a huge different between round or square. I think it may come down to aesthetics and personal preference.
