Rose Gold Differences

Amanda, on December 9, 2020 at 11:28 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15

Hello! My engagement ring is rose gold from Brilliant Earth. I was shopping for my wedding band, and I decided to go somewhere different because the wedding bands at Brilliant Earth are a little out of our price range at the moment. I found one at Kay Jewelers that I loved and ended up purchasing that is also rose gold. However, as we were going over the lifetime warranty, she mentioned that I could get it "dipped" at any time. I left with the ring and asked Brilliant Earth if I could get my engagement ring dipped, and they said they do not dip rose gold, and I could get it polished. Why is there a difference here? Are they made out of different metals? Is my wedding band going to fade while my engagement ring does not? I'm very confused.

Thanks!

If the ring is real rose gold, it should never need to be replated (ie, “dipped”), because the color is basically “baked” into the metal.

Yeah...rose gold isn't rhodium plated (the rhodium is what makes white gold white and "dipping" is replating the rhodium). Rose gold is made by adding copper to the gold, so while polishing can buff out and scratches and make it sparkle, it shouldn't at any point start to lose its color.

It sounds like either the Kay salesperson was not knowledgable about jewelry, or their "rose gold" isn't genuine.

Okay, so it's probably worth it to go with the more expensive ring because it's not "dipped" and won't lose its color? That makes sense to me. Thank you!

Yeah based on these answers and a little more research, I agree. It sounds like I should maybe return the Kay jewelery and splurge on the more expensive one at brilliant earth

Got it, I was confused when she said that, so it sounds like it's not actually rose gold. I will probably end up returning it and getting the more expensive one so it remains the color I want it! Thank you!

I mean, the concerning thing is that genuine rose gold is not dipped at all. The process of making rose gold is completely different from the process of making white gold. Therefore, the long term care of those pieces is different. If they are saying the rose gold ring can be dipped, either they don't know what they're talking about or they aren't selling you a genuine rose gold ring. Rose gold is made by mixing copper with the (yellow) gold. White gold is made by mixing rhodium with (yellow) gold and then it is plated with rhodium to give it that bright color (when the rhodium wears off, it looks yellowish-whitish). Therefore, the piece needs to be replated in rhodium. This is standard in the jewelery world. Rose gold is not plated with another material to get it that color so there is nothing to "dip."

Right, I'm not sure of it was the Kay sales person who didn't know or if it's not genuine rose gold, but that's exactly what they told me at Brilliant Earth. They told me I shouldn't need to "dip" my ring and they would just polish it. I think whether it's the sale person or ingenuity at Kay, I will return it and go with Brilliant Earth since they seem more knowledge and/or offer higher quality.

Yeah, my mom is a jewelery wholesaler and Kay/Zales/Littman/etc. don't really have the best reputation in the business. They're cheaper primarily because they sell cheaper/lower quality products.

Don’t blame you, I would do the same thing. If you read reviews on Kays, they are really negative. Lots of brides on here have had problems with their rings as well. Definitely less hassle and more peace of mind to spend a little more money on a ring you are confident is a quality piece.

Echoing others, rose gold is made from a combination of gold and copper, so it does not need to be dipped. Be aware that 10k, 14k, and 18k rose gold will have different levels of pink in them, since the ratio of gold to copper is different.

I too have a rose gold from BE, and I wanted to get the matching band but it's out of my budget. What does your ring look like? Would love to see! Smiley smile

This is my engagement ring! I called BE after I read some of these comments and they offer layaway. I'm going return the band from Kay's and get one from BE. We'll put the 20% or a little more down now and pay the rest off in 3 monthly installments before our wedding, but they offer 12 monthly installments for layaway just in case that would help with your budget!

Just here to say that I love your ring as well as Brilliant Earth! (My engagement ring is white gold and not from BE, but my wedding band is from BE - also white gold - and I love it. Their quality and customer service has been great!)

Came across this post and just wanted to say it was very helpful!! FH is updating my engagement ring with one from BE but I didn't know whether or not to get an wedding band from there too because it's a little bit expensive and I was thinking of just buying from zales or Kay but now I'm definitely buying everything from BE.

    Your ring is gorgeous!

Thank you, and I'm so glad! This thread was ultimately the reason I just ordered my band from BE, too! We did the layaway option so we're making monthly payments until the wedding! So happy my rings will match!
