I think it depends on where you book. We used Holiday Inn and there were no fees for us for un- booked rooms.

It depends. Some hotels offer courtesy blocks so you wouldn’t be responsible for anything and the guest would pay for themselves. Usually with courtesy blocks unused rooms are released back to the public a month or two before the wedding. I live in a city where courtesy blocks don’t exist and I would’ve been held financially responsible for any unbooked rooms so we did something different.

It really depends. Our reception venue had a contract with 3 hotels - two that were in the same parking lot and one that was just across the street. If we chose one of those three, it was no cost to us unless we didn't meet the minimum for booking. (Which I believe was 80% or something) So had we set aside 40 rooms and only filled 20, we would have had to pay the balance to fill 80%. But we were given the option to do blocks of 10 at a time, and only add more as those filled up. In the end we paid nothing because we filled 29 out of 30 rooms set aside.

Like said above, it depends. I got prices from a couple hotels in the area, and made sure to ask whether this is a "courtesy block" (no money paid by you for unsold rooms), or if I would be responsible for the rooms that do not get booked. That helped me narrow down to a few hotels, then of course picked the best location/priced.

Do NOT agree to pay for the unsold rooms in your block! If they say that is a stipulation tell them you are not comfortable with that and they should give you a low ish amount (20-30) of rooms and add as necessary. You do not need to be on the hook for it!

I tried out WW’s hotel block quote feature today. I stumbled across it while working on my wedding website. Im curious to see how it works out.

I just did mine this week. I went with the hotel that my venue offers a discount for and is the closest to the venue. I do not have to pay for the room block they just have to book their rooms before a certain date to get into the block.

I used hotelplanner.com which is run by The Knot! It's super easy - you just put in the location, dates, and price range and it connects you with a bunch of local hotels. We have a ton of out of town guests, so I ended up with 3 blocks. I did 2 block of 15 rooms and there was no deposit. I did one block of 30 rooms and there was a $200 deposit. I'll get the deposit back if 60% of the rooms book. All of my blocks are available until 3-4 weeks before the wedding date.

    Hope this helps!

Hotels will open up a discounted rate to your guests if they give a code or your name. Usually 10-15 rooms per time, until those are filled they won’t offer more.

The guests pay, you don’t. And 99.9% of hotels won’t charge you if all rooms in a block aren’t taken.

It really depends on where and when you book. We went with Hilton Garden Inn who offered us 10 room nights and we can go from there. We also have no attrition obligations either. If we book 10 room nights we get our suite at the group rate, if we book 20 we get it for free. So far we're at 6 room nights! I honestly think they gave us such a deal because our wedding is in December and the extra revenue would be appreciated.

It honestly depends on the venue your using, if your using one and what hotels in the area have to offer. We booked a hote venue that’s popular for a nice but decent price range in our area. They include open bar, catering, set up and clean up, all the food for cocktail and reception, the cake, and my floral centerpieces! They also included 1 honeymoon suite and 5 complimentary rooms in our package as well with a 20 room block at a discounted rate for any guests over the 5 free overnight rooms. I don’t have a ton of people coming in but the few I do definitely are grateful for the free room and then if there’s any free complimentary left over they will be offered to closest friends and family who wanna stay the night and everyone else is happy with the discount for the rooms that in my hotel block. Plus we all get to be on the same floor and everything!
