Room Blocks...will they charge more for a wedding than another type of event?

Private User, on November 8, 2013 at 3:37 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

We're researching hotel room blocks around our wedding site and were wondering if anyone has experienced being quoted higher rates for a room block related to a wedding versus another type of event (like a family gathering or other, non-corporate party). It seems like one hotel we were speaking with wants to set the room rate by the occupancy instead of the bed (ie, 1-2 person rate, 3 person rate, 4 person rate, instead of rates for a king or for 2 double beds etc.). We were wondering if anyone had experienced that particular issue, or any sort of "wedding markup" in general when dealing with room blocks. Thanks!

We blocked off about 20 rooms for our wedding night and they gave us a discounted rate! Plus exclusive shuttle service to and from the ceremony and the bridal suite at a discounted price and leaving the hotel bar open until 2am! I have never heard of hotels raising the price for a special event~ especially a wedding. Maybe its different in different states? Make sure you call and get quotes from several places. Dont settle!

I use to block rooms off for weddings at the Hotel I worked at and I think they gave like 5% off for room blocks, depending on how many rooms would be allotted on the contract. We would still give the same percentage of rates for whatever event it was though. We would charge for double occupancy with I think an extra 15$ fee per person per night. If this is a small wedding party you could get better deals on booking.com or their website ( 30% off, no refund) But it is nice to be able to keep track of everyone especially if you're doing gift bags.

Usually they give you a discounted rate, not an increased rate. The only variance I've seen from that was one hotel where the block rates can be cancelled until the day of arrival but if you booked online non-refundable you saved about $5. The block rate was still cheaper than their refundable rate. Some hotels will charge more for more than 2 people, especially if the rate includes additional features, like breakfast, where they have a per person cost.

    Try www.hotelplanner.com !!

I heard about this from another bride on here (I'm sorry, I can't remember who!) and it is amazing! You just register (for free), and then submit your location, dates, estimated number of rooms, star level of hotel, etc. This submits a "bid request" and hotels bid for your business!

I did this, and within a few hours I had 6 or so bids. I continued to receive bids for the next week or so. The hotel will name a price that they are willing to give your entire group for those dates, and any conditions. Most hotels listed that you were not responsible for the room block- i.e. if you don't fill the x number of rooms you requested, you don't have to pay for them. A lot of the hotels offered a free room for the bride and groom, as long as x number of rooms were booked for that night (mine is 15 rooms).

Anyway it was great! Oh and the website assigns you a designated representative that will help you with any questions you have.

We didn't have to sign a contract and will not have to pay for rooms that people don't book.

Their original rate is $130 a night. We are getting a block of 15 rooms for $109 a piece.

We're paying a little extra for a shuttle service. We also booked our wedding night room with them.

Although the best way to get better prices for your guests ( at least in the Hotel business and especially during the shoulder months) you just ask the event coordinator for a lower price.

We had that happen to us kinda. We got quoted a discount rate for the group, and it was actually higher in price then the current price for those days and rooms they had posted on their website.

I called the lady back and brought up the issue and she got all rude with me and told me they didn't need our business she knows they will be sold out that weekend. If we didn't like the offer we didn't have to sign the contract.

My next call was to her manager...

Nope, we were able to block 15 rooms on a long weekend (Memorial Day) and they gave us a discount off their regular rates.

I would try another hotel if you are able to.
